Hi,

1. ハリーは、いったい誰なんだろうという表情 — どうぞそう見えますように — を取り繕った。

a) Does どうぞそう見えますように mean he was trying hard to appear that way? It's the use of どうぞ that I'm most unsure about.

b) Totally dumb question, but 誰なんだろう = 誰・な・の・だろう, な = だ, right?

2. それから十分後に鳴った終業ベルが、どんなにありがたかったかしれない。

Does ~かしれない literally mean that one couldn't appreciate just how welcome the bell was, implying that it was very welcome indeed?

3. 「スネイプは君がやったって証明できやしない。」

Is や = は again?

4. それから一週間後、・・・

Is 後 always pronounced ご after words denoting periods of time?

1) a)
That's Harry's voice in his mind; "appear that way, please".

b)
Right.

2) 3)
Yes.

4)
Not always so. のち or あと are also possible.

Thanks Toritoribe,

4)
Not always so. 窶堙娯?堋ソ or 窶堋?窶堙 are also possible.

Are there rules to tell how it should be said in a certain context? Or do people choose according to preference?

What is the object of ナステヲ窶堙ィ窶篭窶堙≫?堋ス?

the "dare nano ka to iu hyoujou" or harry's wish?

edit: "dare nandarou"

ご is most common. のち has a classical or formal nuance. They are basically interchangeable, though.

表情…を取り繕った。

表情 is the one.

ご and あと are almost the same. あと might sound awkward in some cases due to collocation or something, but it's at least understandable.
