2. The narrator is recounting a conversation with his niece about problems that his niece is having with people at work ignoring her. It has been explained how his niece told her boss that she could not continue in this way. Then:

The missing part is supposed to be filled in by the student with an appropriate phrase expressing someone's emotion.
a) I think the first part means "However, on the contrary [i.e. rather than helping], this [i.e. the niece complaining to her boss] made her boss angry..." Is that right? Is 相手 the boss?
b) Is the part in quotes spoken by the boss?
c) I'm trying to make the part in quotes mean "That attitude towards new employees is common" (i.e. it is common for existing employees to ignore new employees), but the word くせ does not seem to fit, so maybe I have it all wrong...
d) Does きた emphasise the sense of the boss answering the employee?
3. Next sentence:
真由美もつい＿＿＿＿＿＿＿＿＿、「私はちゃんと仕事 をしているだけです！」と、言い返してしまったという ことだった。
a) Is もつい = も + つい (unintentionally -- i.e. she didn't mean to blurt this out)? Does も suggest that she too was angry?
b) Is だけ used in a sense like English "I'm only trying to do my job properly!"?
4. Next sentence:
真由美が大変な思いをしているのは分かるが、子供の世 界のような出来事に、私は＿＿＿＿＿＿＿。
My guess: "Mayumi clearly feels strongly about this, but I am/was ______ by this childish incident."
a) Could 大変な思いをしている mean "feel strongly"?
b) Why are している and 分かる present tense when the rest of the narrative appears to be in the past tense? I suppose just to show that these feelings still prevail?
