つぎであります / のに / でしょう / にはいられない

Hiya,

1. The speaker is telling how he met a pretty girl on a train, but there was a mix-up about which language they could converse in.

そうしたら、彼女は、英語で、つぎでありますからしつ れいしますって！

Am I right in thinking that 「つぎでありますからしつれいします」 are the girl's words?

What does つぎであります mean? Could it mean "I have to get off at the next stop"?


2. Then, talking of their communication difficulties, the narrator says:

きれいな人だったのに、ざんねんだったなあと、会社の 人に言ったらね、イタリア語で話せばよかったのに、と 言われたんだよ。

My translation: "She was a pretty girl, so it was very disappointing. When I told the people at work, they said I should have spoken (to her) in Italian."

Is this correct?

However, I don't exactly understand either instance of のに. What meaning(s) does it have here?


3. きのうは、ぼくのたんじょう日だったでしょう。

What is the function of でしょう in this sentence? I thought でしょう indicated doubt/probability, but surely the guy knows when his birthday is?


4. 彼は、お茶がだいすきで、いつも、お茶を飲まずにはい られない。

I'm guessing this is one of those double-negative "not possible to not drink tea" = "always has to be drinking tea" type constructions, but how does にはいられない split up? Which form of which verb is involved?

でしょう can be used for asking light confirmation - "yesterday was my birthday, wasn't it?" "yesterday was my birthday, you know."

飲まずにはいられない／飲まないではいられない
(negation)+にはいられない = cannot help doing ～
He likes tea so much, he cannot help drinking it all the time.

I'm pretty sure that's a typo of つぎでおります or 次で降ります.;-)

のに expresses the speaker's complaint/dissatisfaction. This is from its adversative conjunction usage.
e.g.
きれいな人だったのに、（知り合いになれなかったのは）残念だったなあ
She was a pretty girl, so it was very disappointing (that I couldn't be friend with her).

イタリア語で話せばよかったのに、（なぜそうしなかったの？）
You should have spoken (to her) in Italian, (nevertheless why didn't you do so?)

So your interpretation is suitable here.

ない：negation

（verb +ず) には いられない
cannot be in the state of not doing ~
= cannot help doing ~
