さようならです

Hello,

So I was watching this American TV show Heroes about a Japanese man who can travel through time. He teleports back in feudal Japan and has a love affair with a girl there. In the end he must leave her for his destiny and that's when he says さようならです. The subtitle reads 'farewell'.

I never knew you can add です after さようなら. Do you think that could be old Japanese (in order to reproduce the language from that era)?

No. That's Modern Japanese. さようなら is used as a noun, like お別れ, there. "Good-bye" can perform the same roll also in English (e.g. goodbye party), can't it?

これでさようならです。 ＝ これでお別れです。
