1. A list of occasions on which Americans give tips has been given, culminating in:

... 出かける時にドアマンがタクシーを呼び止めてくれれば、それに対してチップ、というように、何度もチップを取られる。

a) Is くれれば the conditional passive form of くれる, meaning "if (one) is given (the favour of having the taxi called by the doorman)"? [Edited: sorry, I don't think it can be passive?]

b) What does それに対してチップ mean? Does それ refer to the people to whom the tips are given?

c) What does というように mean here?


2. 氷を長い間持っていると、冷たくて指の感じがなくなってきます。

Translation given: "When one holds ice for a long time, the cold makes one lose the sensation in one's fingers."

I have managed to confuse myself about the grammar of 冷たくて. Does 冷たくて modify 指? Does it mean something different from 冷たい指?


3. A国とB国との関係が悪化しました。

Depending on context, could this be translated as either of the following?

"Relations worsened between country A and country B" (talking about a historical event)

"Relations have worsened between country A and country B" (they've worsened recently and they're bad now)


4. 予約をしていかないと、入れないのではないだろうか。

Translation given: "I fear we won't be able to get in unless we make a reservation in advance"

a) I assume that していかない is from して + いく? What sense does いく add here?

b) Could you explain the double negative 入れないのではない?

Yeah, it's not the passive but the -ba conditional of くれる.

"if a doorman gives the favour of hailing a taxi for me,"

冷たくて is modifying なくなる or expressing the reason why the sensation is lost. "because it's cold, we lose the sensation"

Hmm, both are possible. For instance, それによってA国とB国との関係が悪化しました just expresses a past event, and have no implication for the present state. Similarly, それ以来A国とB国との関係が悪化しました can be for the latter case. Thus, it depends the context, as always...

Just "go". "go without making a reservation"

～ではないだろうか: I fear/wonder

It's a kind of idiom. Therefore 入れないのではないだろうか maens "I fear we won't be able to get in".

対してチップ = tip(s) handed over ...
それに = ... for the favour of having the taxi called

I tried to make this work just with "go", but it didn't seem to be right. From 予約をしていかないと I got "If we make a reservation and don't go".

予約をして = make a reservation (and)
いかない = not go

Is my interpretation theoretically possible but eliminated because common sense says that's not what it means, or is it not possible?

それに対して = for that (= the favour done by the door man)
チップ（をはらう） = (give) tips (to him)

Yeah, as undrentide-san wrote, you can think that ない negates the whole clause 予約をしていく, not only いく.

予約をしていかないと＝「予約をしていくこと」をしな いと

It's almost similar to 予約をしないで行くと, but ～ないと often connotes "if not, a bad thing will occur".
