いつも行く / わらわれて / 言いました

In a narrative, the narrator is telling how he was walking home and got caught in the rain.

1. たいした雨ではないので、そのまま歩いていろと、本屋 のおばさんが、かさをかしてあげるから、さして行くよ うに、と言ってくれた。

My translation: "It wasn't raining hard, so I carried on walking, when a lady from a bookstore tried to lend me an umbrella and told me to put it up while I was walking along." Is this correct?

2. A litte later the narrator is stopped by someone else:

いつも行く、パン屋のおじさんだった。

I gather this is saying that the person who stopped him was a man from a bakery, but I don't understand いつも行く. What does it mean?

3. Then the narrator comments:

まるで、ぬれねずみのようだ、とわらわれてしまった。

Is the verb わらう? Is it saying something like "I was being laughed at because I looked like a drowned rat (lit. mouse)"?

4. One of the questions in the comprehension exercise asks:

だれが、かさをかしてくれると言いましたか。

I understand this to mean "Who offered to lend an umbrella?" but I do not understand who is the subject of 言いました. Is it だれ or is it the narrator?

1) I'm guessing そのまま歩いていろと is a typo for そのまま歩いていると. You've basically got it, but "the lady from the bookstore said she'd lend me an umbrella, so I should use it on my way" to wherever he was going is closer.

2) いつも行く is modifying パン屋. It means the bread shop I always go to, or frequent.

3) Yeah, that looks right.

4) It's だれ. Although, "who said they'd lend (me) an umbrella?" is closer. There's that と言いましたか at the end.

I wonder if you could help me a litle further with:

かさをかしてあげるから、さして行くように、と言って くれた

Although I get the general idea, I'm not sure exactly which words と言ってくれた governs (in other words, what the lady said versus what is the narrator's commentary), and I'm not sure of the exact function of から and ように. Does ように refer to the manner in which the narrator is told to go on his way? Does から mean "after" here?

よう（にと）言ってくれた means that the subject gave a suggestion/advice (for me), thus, she said something like 「かさをかしてあげるから、さして行きなさい」. から indicates "the reason," as in 暑いから服を脱いだ.

この季節だからよくあることでしょうねえ。特にこっち はですね、毎日３７度ぐらいで、湿気が多いです。外に 出ると熱くて濡れた毛布に包まれてるような感じですよ 。

暑いから服を脱いだ = "Because it was hot, I took off my clothes."

かさをかしてあげるから、さして行きなさい = "Because I'm lending you the umbrella, go on your way holding it."

?

Is that right? (I kind of gave up on that idea because it didn't seem to fit...)

"I'll lend you this umbrella, so use it on your way (home, or wherever)."

Ah, yes, it sounds more feasible with "so". I think I get it now.

37℃！:dead: う～ん、こっちでも今ちょうど梅雨で 相当ジメジメしてるけど、さすがにそこまで気温は高くないです。（今日で30℃弱くらい。）というか、37℃なんてひと夏に数日あるかないかですね。


@ The OP, an additional explanation regarding よう（に）:

"The dictionary form of the verb + よう" indicates an indirect quote of a suggestion/order/request when used with verbs like 言う, 勧める, 求める, 頼む, 命じる, etc..

差して行くように（と）言った。
次の試合に勝つよう（に）求めた。
こっちに来るように（と）命じた。

On the other hand, と is also used for a direct quote, so こっちに来るようにと言った can mean that こっちに来るように is what the subject really said or「こっちに来るように」と言った, the quotation marks are usually used for the case, though.
