Kubota has introduced what it describes as the world's first hydrogen-powered self-driving tractor, combining automation with clean energy in the farming industry. The prototype, currently on display at the World Expo until Thursday, is a mid-sized machine with 100 horsepower.

Unlike conventional tractors, it has no driver's seat and can run entirely autonomously or be controlled remotely. Cameras with artificial intelligence allow it to recognise obstacles, people, and even weeds, while the system enables it to move independently between storage barns and fields. Its power comes from a fuel cell that produces electricity through a reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, releasing only water as a byproduct. Kubota has not yet announced when the tractor will be available for sale, as testing is still underway.

The Japanese heavy machinery manufacturer unveiled a prototype fuel cell tractor in 2024. The new version boasts self-driving capability and greater hydrogen storage capacity. Higher efficiency is achieved by separating the drive motor from the implement motor. "We were able to develop [the tractor] by combining the agricultural machinery, hydrogen and autonomous driving technologies that we have built up," said Isamu Kazama, who heads Kubota's team on carbon-neutral technology. "We're very pleased that we were able to unveil it at the World Expo." Commercial feasibility will require regulatory changes allowing the machine to drive autonomously on public roads between fields. Hydrogen supply infrastructure will also be needed.
