No kidding: now that Covid-19 has finally been downgraded to a Class 5 disease, some Japanese are preparing to go maskless by taking smiling lessons.

Thirty-seven people, including the elderly, took a smiling lesson to prepare for taking off their masks in public following three years of the COVID-19 pandemic. The instruction was held in the Akabane district in Tokyo's Kita Ward on May 7, the day before the reclassification of COVID-19 to a less-severe category that includes the seasonal flu. "With mask wearing having become the norm, people have had fewer opportunities to smile, and more and more people have developed a complex about it," said Keiko Kawano, 49, the smile trainer who served as the instructor for the lesson. "Moving and relaxing the facial muscles is the key to making a good smile," she said. Participants used hand mirrors to check their smiles. "Smiles are essential for maskless communication," said Yasuko Watarai from Kita Ward, who participated in the lesson. "I want to apply what I learned today at volunteer activities and other gatherings."

I don't think they want to learn the creepy American way.

I don't know what you mean, we're perfectly normal. Free lesson begins now!

Step 1: wait until eye contact is established. Don't be that weirdo smiling for no reason

Step 2: lower your chin in deference. This shows respect (like a bow from the neck-up) and also serves to obscure your imposing jawline

Step 3: maintain eye contact through your eyebrows. The whites of your eyes should form their own smile shape, so you're beaming three smiles in one!

Step 4: pull back the corners of your mouth. At this angle it will appear as a smile shape, but if you're looking straight ahead it would look like a straight line. This is why it's important to drop that chin first!

Step 5 (optional): part your lips to expose your mouth-bones. Reserve this for friends or when you wish to appear extra-friendly

Step 6: count all your new friends!
