I'm off on fall break and it has come at just the right time. School work and exams were starting to get to me so the Monday and Tuesday off will be a welcome vacation. I don't really plan on doing anything exciting except going shopping with my mommy to get new clothes and going to the dentist on Monday. I really dread going to the dentist because they basically tell you what you do wrong with your teeth. For me it's always, "You need to floss more," but I can never get into the habit for some reason. What's worse is I seem to have the same dental assistant every time so I'm sure she gets tired of telling me. Also, I tend to get cavities a lot, so every now and then a trip to the dentist turns into air abrasion and a filling.
So, because of fall break I'm home from university now. It wasn't a very pleasant trip home for a couple reasons. First, it has been absolutely miserable outside for the past two days. It has rained non-stop and it's about 50 degrees out. Walking to class in that is not fun. Secondly, what is supposed to be an hour and-a-half drive turned into two and-a-half hours. It took forever to get to the interstate because everyone was leaving to go home. Then, as soon as I got on the highway it was stop-and-go traffic because of some accident. It took about 40-50 minutes to go a total of 10 miles. Because of that delay, when I hit a major city I have to go through it was rush hour so I was stuck in more traffic. I really just wanted to pull my hair out and was so relieved when I got home. I hate driving on the interstate when it is wet and rainy.
On Thursday I went to the study abroad office at my university to discuss what exactly I have to do. The advisor was really helpful and cleared up a lot of questions, namely that I don't apply to the university yet but to the actual program itself. So, I did that and there is a checklist of stuff I have to do before February 1. One of the things is to write a 500-800 word statement of purpose. Basically, it is about why I want to study abroad. So I'm in the process of proofreading that. I also have to get a new passport since the old one was when I was still a minor. I'm so looking forward to that… not. I also need two recommendations from faculty here which should be pretty easy. After I pass this initial screening process I start applying to the actual university and getting stuff taken care of like seeing which classes transfer credits and applying for a student visa. It's a long process and I'll be glad when it is all said and done.
Today my mother and I went shopping at the mall to pick up some clothes for this coming winter. Before we went shopping we ate at the Cheesecake Factory. I thought it was a place where all they had was cheesecake but I was wrong. It's a really nice place, kind of a post-modern type feel to it. There was a LOT of food to choose from and I ended up getting a Kobe beef burger since I've never had Kobe beef. I ordered it rare and it was really good. The portions were amazingly generous and I can't say enough about the service; it was probably the best service I've ever had. The waiter was really attentive and friendly, almost like a butler. After having stuffed ourselves we went to the mall to get some clothes. We ended up in Old Navy after awhile and they were having some birthday thing going on so we got a coupon for a free pair of jeans which was nice. I also met Glen Robinson's aunt while I was there. She saw me wearing my Purdue sweatshirt and asked me what I know about Purdue. I said I go to Purdue as a student, which took her awhile to get over because I look like I'm a freshman in high school or younger. If you don't know who Glen Robinson is, he is a former Purdue and NBA basketball player. Anyways, after that we went grocery shopping and headed home.
So that's what is going on in my life right now. I'm hoping to keep a string of blogs together to kind of catalog the study abroad process. Maybe I'll be able to look back on it someday with lots of fond memories! Kind of corny, but oh well. Until next time; peace.
