MEXT Japanese Studies 2017/2018

Woohoo, I got it. Last year I failed in the final round, but this year I put heaps more effort into my application and improved my ability.
I was worried because some of you are N2, and I failed the N3 in December (by a tiny bit). So there's hope for lower ability levels.

Congratulations!!! All that hard work paid off!
I'm curious, how did they notify you? Did they say you passed the screening or the university was chosen already?

And did they give you a reason for your rejection last year??

I got a phonecall then later an email from the embassy, they seemed happy for me, which was nice. They confirmed I'll be placed in a university for the Japanese Studies scholarship, but I may not know which one until August.
This information wasn't directly from Japan, but relayed from the embassy, the official letter will be later. The embassy suspects my previous weakness was inexperience with the language.

I think you're in the exact same boat as me!
My first post was to ask if there was still a chance that one could be rejected even if you were chosen for the scholarship.
This was the email I had received a few days ago:

"The Consulate-General of Japan in (my city here, just don't want to disclose) would like to congratulate you on passing the second stage of the MEXT Japanese Studies Scholarship Program.

Our headquarters is scheduled to notify us of your university placement by mid-August. Though efforts to accommodate your specific university request will be made, there is no guarantee that any of the universities you indicated will be the final choice. In addition, please be informed that this notification does not guarantee your position in a Japanese university. Our headquarters is still in the process of choosing a school for you and university placement will be the final confirmation."

Would this be similar to what you received as well?
I keep hearing accounts of people still getting rejected after secondary screening :/ I just want to know for sure!
 
Hi kikopony ! Congrats, I'm happy for you ! I admit I was starting to lose hope seeing that people with my level were rejected too. How did you find the written test at the time you took it ? Were you able to do the most of th kanji's part ? I realized I failed it quite a bit and am afraid of being rejected because of that.

Yeah, I got the same message. As far as I understand you are in the clear for going to Japan, there's nothing to worry about now.

I'm afraid I actually studied harder for the written part, so it was probably my stronger point. It's fat paragraphs of comprehension that stuff me up. But the Advanced part of the exam was probably mainly mistakes even in the written section.
 
Congrats to all of you who got in xD.
I'm starting to grow impatient. I've been checking my inbox now and then.

I replied to the email I received trying to see whether the consulate had any more specific indication of when final placement notifications would be sent out but they just said August. Back to waiting lol

Only from Undergraduate studies students stories so I feel like that irrelevant to us. I feel like anyone that's not trying for the Japanese Studies scholarship have no idea what we are applying for haha.

I also received word today that I passed the second screening and will be informed of my university placement in July. My first choice was Osaka University, second Kyoto University, and Doshisha for my third. I'm actually hoping I get Kyoto University now even though I put it as second on my application..

Did anybody fill its application by handwriting? Reading what Gerald wrote on his blog, I realized we weren't allowed to fill our application by hand, but I wasn't able to fill my application directly on the computer. Hope they will understand...
 
I also wrote my application by hand because they gave us from the embassy the application form already printed.
They asked questions for the interview from my application so I guess they understood what was written on it.
In the application form it also written:

'１．Type application, if possible, or write neatly by hand in block letters.（明瞭に記入すること｡)'

So I don't think this is one of the reasons the applications get rejected.

if an applicant is not given the special talent like me to write clearly and legibly, better yet type it. Sometimes, it is needs to be safe in scholarship applications and I find it more appropriate to type rather than handwriting it as per my experience. Moreover, you can still handwrite your applications, there's no discrimination in this application. Just sharing my two cents folks. ;) @alchie
