Evening!

1) I find myself saying these a lot, but I'm still not sure how to say them correctly.
"i've forgotten how to say ___"
"i've forgotten the word."
"i keep forgetting ___"
Should 忘れる be in the past or progressive tense? And for "word", do I use 言葉?
For example, while talking to a friend "昨日、庭には・・・あぁ、「言葉忘れちゃった]" (My guess.)
Or would it even be おぼえていない?

2) Would "lame" be an accurate translation for ださい? And in reference to clothing, could いまどき be translated as "stylish/ in fashion"? (この服、いまどきじゃないよ。)

1)
言葉 is more likely "language". 単語 and 忘れる are the words you are looking for, but I would say えーと、なんていうんだっけ, えーと、名前なんだっけ, えーと、あれだよ、あれ or like that in your situation.

2)
It totally depends on the context.
いまどきじゃない is more likely "oldish".

Almost forgot I posted this... thanks very much, guys!

Also, when talking about Japanese versions of books, games, films, etc., is 日本語版 the right word to use? For example, would こないだ日本語版のハリーポッターを読んでみた and このゲームの日本語版を買いたい be correct?

By こないだ you mean この間?Other than that your sentences are perfectly fine although a lot of times you'll see it without the の like
この間ハリーポッター日本語版を読んでみた

I see! Thanks for your help.
Yeah, I meant この間.

こないだ works fine as a colloquial form/contraction of このあいだ. It's indeed commonly used in daily conversations.
e.g.
こないだの話なんだけどさぁ、あれあのあとどうなったの?

I hear こないだ the most often so I tend to use it more, though perhaps when writing この間 is better (?)

Pardon all my questions, I thought it'd be better to put them here than make a new topic.

1) So would an accurate summary of 単語 and 言葉 be:
単語 -> refers to single words/ terms and is usually used in reference to languages and vocabulary
言葉 -> more general and means speech, remarks, something someone has said, etc.
And is 言葉 the appropriate choice in these sentences:
(when a friend uses a word I've not come across before) "その言葉は初めて見たよ"
(referring to odd words in any language) "ちょっと変な言葉だね"

2) Is 分かれる the intransitive form of 分ける?

3) Is there a rule as to when you should use 初 and when you should use 最初? Wanted to say something like 昨日は今年(最初?初?)の秋雨だった and was unsure.

たくさん質問してすみません。:shy:

Yes, as same as あんとき(=あのとき), 知んない(=知らない) or 言いたかない(=言いたくはない).

1)
I wouldn't use just 言葉 in those contexts. ~なんて言葉 works fine, though.

2)
Yes.

3)
最初 is more general. 初 seems to have a nuance that it has never happened so far.
e.g.
the first Japanese astronaut: 日本人(で)最初の宇宙飛行士 / 日本人初の宇宙飛行士
the first Sunday in this month: 今月最初の日曜日 / 今月初の日曜日? (sounds awkward to me)

Doesn't なんて have a negative connotation, though?
Depends on how you say it. He's using it purely as an informal way to say 何という。Also you can't mistake it for the meaning that you are saying because that depends on it being preceded by <something>. Like Rinilexなんて!ばかやろう! (No offense, just an example. :)

Personally I suggest using the correct forms. It's so easy to get used to speaking casually that it becomes difficult to switch to more polite speech when the situation calls for it. Whereas if you err on the side of proper speech no one will fault you for it and it will serve you better in the long run. Just my opinion.
