MEXT Scholarship 2015 (Research Students)

Hi Aziz, I have applied to Keio through univ recommendation, for Keio they didn't mention minimum GPA. But for ur case if they gave a guideline on min GPA, then stick to it as that might be prof personal requirement or he got info from selection committee I guess. For my case, the application open in Sep or Oct, and I sent in my doc before deadline in Dec. Then I check with the admission office once in a while to check the status. Just make sure u provide all the documents they need and it will be fine. You can check what else needed either with admission office or professor u got in touch with. But the required doc should be mentioned in application pack, which is quite typical for Japan applications.

Btw, has professor mentioned he could take u as his Phd student?

Hello everyone... I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one that is waiting for the answer... is anyone applying to Hokkaido Uni?...
Can't wait for December!:)

Hi melococo I have also applied for Hokkaido ....lets see what happens...really tensed...fingers crossed..hope we all get it :D

I just received a brief email from Tokyo Tech (Tokodai) asking me to confirm my prospective advisor and other department/study information.
Nothing was mentioned about MEXT scholarship, besides that I am an Embassy nominee, and they didn't ask about confirmation on my intentions to attend Tokodai or accomodations, etc.

Has anyone else received any similar communication from their prospective universities, especially Tokodai? Thanks!

Hey guys , important message.

I received word from the embassy employee in my country ( Slovakia) that I passed through the last screening in Tokyo, my uni still havent been decided, though.
Any of you with some results?

Hi everyone!

I'm so happy to have found this forum, I wish I'd have known about it before!

I'm Liron, a fellow MEXT nominee. Passed the first stage, embassy exams, interview etc., applied to three universities (Todai, Meiji, Waseda) and received 3 LoA's. Currently stressfully waiting for the final results and wishing I had any idea regarding my chances.... I've been extremely anxious for the past few months and it's such a relief to see everyone here talking about it. Feeling not so alone anymore! I've been told by the nice scholarship coordinator at the embassy that results arrive usually in the middle of December and it feels like forever until then... :(

Anyway, wishing good luck to everyone here! fingers crossed for all of us. :)

hi guys!!

Today I have received email from Japanese Embassy in Indonesia about the final result of secondary screening, and I passed it!! *yeaaaaay*
but, they cannot inform the university placement by now. the university placement will be announced around January 2015.

How about you guys? have you received the good news also?

...anxiety is eating me...so nervous

I am from Singapore
I have also received an email from my Prof in Japan that I have pass the interview.
Apparently he got a letter from the Japan ministry to confirm my acceptance.
Now waiting for the embassy to tell me

:)

Congratulations to all of you guys who have received some sort of confirmation !
That's fantastic !

May I ask you when was the deadline for you to submit your letters of acceptance to your embassy ?

Here in Canada it was September 22nd... I am wondering if the reason why some of you guys are already receiving confirmations is because your deadline was earlier... Thank you for letting us know ! And once again congrats !!! :D

I also received notification from my Embassy that I passed the 2nd screening by MEXT in Tokyo.
However, as with everyone else who got this message too, we still must wait until January to get the final decision and university placement.
@nekojita33: Here in the USA, my Embassy deadline for sending the acceptance letters was also Sept. 22nd.

deadline in Indonesia was September 5th, a little bit earlier from other countries I think.

hope you get the result from your embassy soon

Final decision ? Isn't the confirmation of successfully passing the Mext screening the final confirmation ? I mean you've passed all the steps but you're now just waiting to know in which uni you'll be sent to ? Thanks for your reply !

The deadline to submit the LOA here in Jordan was Sept. 2nd.

I just got the call yesterday that I passed the secondary screening and that sometime around January will be final decisions/university placement confirmations.

Congratulations to those who got the news and good luck to those still waiting!

I have just received an email from the embassy here in the UK, and I have passed the second screening too!

I can see how the information is a little confusing! The email says that MEXT will start contacting the universities from now and go through a further application procedure. They do not have the exact details on the scholarship yet, but will contact us soon.

Hope this helps anyone and congratulations to everyone!!

In Malaysia the result still haven't officially announce from the embassy (although some have already got the news from their professor).
Our LOA submission duedate was 30 Sept, seems later than most of the countries. =D

That's what I had originally thought, too...but the Embassy said that I "passed the second stage of screening in Tokyo. This is not the final screening and therefore not a guarantee that you will be awarded the scholarship. The final decision is typically made in early 2015."
So it looks like I've got to wait for the final final decision (too many stages of screening!) for not only university placement, but also confirmation on the award itself.

Here's my speculation:
- MEXT just finished the "second stage screening" in which they review all our application packets / admission letters (just like the Embassy did), along with the Embassy recommendation. Those who pass are considered for placement at the universities.
- Now, they will contact the universities and ask questions about things like...1. What sort of communication do you have with the applicant? Do you really want them in your lab? Can you support their research activities? 2. How many applicants do you have for the upcoming year, total? How many international applicants do you have? 3. Which tuition scheme does this student cost? (private, national, public)
- From this type of information, they determine whether any of our three preferred schools can truly accept us (at the school-level, regardless of whether the professor would take us), whether the tuition fees can be paid, and whether we can conduct our research well in a particular lab.

After all, consider an applicant who applies to Todai, Keio, and Waseda. All three schools are extremely popular/competitive with a lot of applicants (Todai the highest one). So, MEXT must ask Todai if they can really accept you as a student considering how many applications they get...if it's too crowded, they look at Keio and Waseda. Both of these schools also get a ton of applicants, but these are private schools so the tuition is way higher. In this scenario, it's feasible that MEXT decides a particular applicant cannot be sent to any of their preferred universities given the hypothetical circumstances I mentioned (that's why it's smart to list one school you can definitely get into). So, even the award itself is not decided until all the schools have been contacted. Hopefully this speculation makes some kind of sense.

AmerikaJin5, that certainly makes logical sense. Hopefully having LOAs will also support this as well.
I'm glad I was able to receive one from both Waseda and Nagoya University, if this could be true.

Edit: I just received a reply back from the embassy about this , and her answer was the same as your speculations.

I just got the letter from the embassy !!! I passed the second screening as well ! YAY !!! :D
Thanks for your explanations Amerikajin5 !
I applied to Waseda, Keio and Tokyo Metropolitan University so although I might not get into the first two I'm confident I will be able to get into the third one as they seem so eager to get MEXT student when I applied for the LOA, it took not even a week for them to review my application and send me the LOA !
If any of you had to calculate the odds of us going to Japan next year at this point after passing the second screening what would you say our chances are ? 50 %, 75 %, 95 % ??
This is all so exciting ! But I must admit that I was stressed as hell when I opened the letter attachment when I got the email from the embassy... what if I didn't pass the second screening oh geez I'd rather not think about it !!! :D
I don't know for you guys but since I've applied to the MEXT although I've been somehow confident, it is so huge of a deal in my life right now (not easy to turn everything around at 35 !) that I've been telling myself to be careful and not to get ahead of things... so I always speak in terms of "IF I get to go to Japan I blah blah blah..."... you know I don't want to jinx the whole thing !
What are your thoughts on that if any ?
Is this a huge thing for you as well (from what I've read it is :) ), do you have plans B and C, etc.
Can't wait for January now !!! :)
