It depends on how good your Japanese is.
Is you are not at leas N3/N2 already, I think your English should be pretty good.
If your Japanese is already high, I don't think you English needs to be.

Anyways, they will evaluate both languages in the screening process.

Oh Gosh! I've just received the email from the SRE. I've been pre-selected ! I'm really excited and nervous at the same time.

What is mean by "whether have obtained Admission from them"? Does it mean the university entrance exam? Or it just mean verbal agreement with the professors?

If you look into one of the attachments (Notes on Remarks), scroll down to the section for placement preference form. It says ignore the part to state whether you've obtained admission. Though you still need to obtain admission from your potential supervisors but you don't have to state whether you have or not in the form.

I am new to this forum, and I would like to thank you all for the insights, experience and information! It is almost nice to be amongst like-minded people with a common goal. Best of luck to those who applied this year!

I haven't apply this year but am seriously considering in applying for 2016. I have been out of school for a few years now, working in a company (I am still under 30). Back in my bachelor and master studies research wasn't really a big component (I was in design and we worked in studios mostly). I am not sure if this is the right topic to post in, but I am just wondering how much does past research experience affect your chances of getting in? Besides my thesis study I really don't have any publications. Though I do have a keen interest in research and would love to do it in Japan.

Sorry if this is not the right topic to post in, maybe I can post this somewhere else. But once again good luck to all scholars this year and I hope you will hear great results soon!

I am in a similar boat. I have good grades, amazing references, great work experience, and a decently well written research proposal, but I have done very little research. I submitted my application earlier this month and I am waiting to hear back, but when I do will keep you posted.

If you don't mind me asking, is it hard to pass the first screening? The document reviews. Do they filter out lots of people, such as ones without much research experience during this round?

Hello nice people I wonder if someone could help me with this doubt I've been having? It's about the application for the scholarship as a research student. When you choose your options, does it have to be only universities, or can I apply directly to an institute of research? I'm asking this because next year I'll apply for the scholarship and there's a certain institute where I'd love to conduct my research. That institute belongs to an university, but it funcions independently. Later I pretend to extend that reseacrh in a master's course of that same univeristy, but I want to start as a research student first, so I was wondering if it's okay to put that institute as an option, or if it has to be the university. I tried to contact the embassy in my country but didn't get an answer yet, so I was wondering if someone here that went through that process could help.

Has anyone received notification about when the exams will be for those who submitted their application last month (May)? Are the exams done in groups or individually? Since the exams are the 1st step in the screening, not getting notified about the exams would mean an applicant has failed right away, correct?
