MEXT Scholarship 2015 (Research Students)

Nope. Guess I didn't make it. So, when is the exam?

i also did not received the email, will try again next year.i am from Johor so also not familiar with the places in KL.

Sorry to hear about that but I wish you luck in your next application.

I'm sorry to hear that and wish you all the best for next year application.

It will be on 1-June-2014.

Hi there, i have also received an email from the embassy that the exam will be on 1-June-2014. Hope to see you there.

I saw that there's about 70 of us in the emailing list. Hope to see you there too and good luck.

Regarding the recommendation letter. Hi, everyone Ive just got my recommendation from my current university. It is sealed in an envelope with my proffesors signature. From what Ive read we are required to submit one original recommendation letter and 2 copies. Im confused because my original is sealed and if I open the envelope to make copies then the Mext office would see that it is no longer sealed. Can anyone help me out?

That was also one of the questions that I asked the embassy here in my country. The embassy staff answered that if the recommendation is already sealed in an envelope then there is no need to produce the extra copies. But the case might be different depending on the country so It would still be best to ask the Japan Embassy your specific country for this.

Hello everyone!
I have a question related with the research program plan that I need to present with the other documents for the "Research student" scholarship, some know exactly what I need to present in this part. I understood that is kind of preliminary project but if it is the case. How specific I need to be?
Thank you everyone for all the information!
Regards

My 2 cents worth. The MEXT RS Scholarship via Embassy Recommendation is technically a non-graduating programme. I.e. you are supposed to be a research student and do research till the 1.5/2 years are up. So for the initial research proposal, you should be writing based on your planned research work AS A RESEARCH STUDENT. It should be somewhat detailed and show that you know what you are in for (include things like a research timeline). In my opinion, the easiest way is to connect your planned research with your previous research work (e.g. bachelor's or master's thesis). It would help also to supply a list of publications (conferences, journals, etc...) if you have any.

Of course, most people who get the RS eventually jump over to do a Master's or PhD. This will require a new proposal to MEXT for a scholarship extension to cover your postgrad programme (don't worry about it now, when the time comes, your department will tell you the procedure). Usually, you will enter the course 6 months into your RS period (possibly requiring an entrance exam). From then on, you are no longer a research student but a full-fledged doctoral/masters student.

Hi, regarding this research and regular student. I didnt quite understand it from the beginning. Say I graduated with a business degree for my bachelor. Should I apply as a research student since it will be easier than move up to Masters? I want to the Global MBA which is fully taught in English so theres no requirement for Japanese proficiency. Ive completed all my proposals and documents. But Im stuck should I change to a reseach student since initially I applied as a regular student. Ive not been in Japan or pass any university entrance examination so should I change?

Hi, I am from malaysia, and I had just received the notification email for entrance examinationn. Just want to know how is the format for english entrance examination? Does the format have change in compared to the previous pass year like 2010 and earlier. Have anyone else got past year paper? Thank for sharing!

When you say you "applied", do you mean you applied to MEXT or to the university?

MEXT offers the "research student" scholarship by embassy recommendation which can be extended to a postgrad scholarship.

In some cases, you might be asked to take an entrance exam immediately after arriving, in order to enter the postgrad course as soon as possible. Regardless, your status will be research student during that short time before you officially matriculate as a grad student.

I'm not sure if the "university recommendation" route can allow you to enter a course directly without becoming an RS.

Hey good to know another Malaysian here. And congrats on the shortlist for the first screen. All I know is that the english paper is going to be MCQ provided they did not change the format. I've no past year papers so I'll practice on samples of TOEFL papers. Good luck and see you next Sunday!

Hello! ^_^

Congratulations on passing the first screening!

I just checked the English past paper from 2010 and it looks the same. I applied for the MEXT scholarship last year (didn't get it, hopefully more luck this year) and the English paper looked like the one from 2010. It either had questions with long reading texts and then you had to circle the right answer, or it had grammar questions where you also had to circle the correct answer from the options given. :) It was not hard.

I guess the format will be the same as the past year papers and congratulation for being able to attend the written examination. Hope to meet you on next week and wish you the best.

Sorry to know that and could you share with us until which level have you managed to get? I mean have you passed the first screening process ( written examination + interview) or? I really hope to get more knowledge and details from the past applicants. Sorry for asking too much on this.

Last year I passed the written examination and I also went to the interview. However, I did not pass after the interview. However, last year I didn't contact any professors beforehand and I also don't think that my thesis topic was very interesting. So that's probably why I failed.

This year I contacted professors and received a positive reply from those who wish to accept me to their university if I receive the MEXT scholarship. I also changed my thesis topic to a more interesting one. So hopefully this year I will have more luck. :)

The deadline for the applications in my country is tomorrow. I think that the written exam will probably be next weekend. I am waiting for them to notify us of the exact date. And then if I pass the written exam, the interview will probably be somewhere in mid-June. :)

Thank you for you input and it's very informative.

I have also contacted some of the professors and so far only got verbal agreement to take me in that if i have passed the first screening ( Written and interview). May i know how is your side working? How did the professor reply you together with the agreement to accept you(Would you mind to share the message here ^_^)?

It's in Kl so transport should be fine. If no one is taking you there, take a bus? Or take a taxi if there's no other choice. Just don't miss this opportunity! I have already spent a lot on flight tickets to KL so I don't think you'll be anywhere as bad as me haha. BTW thanks for the link. Will check it out.

You're welcome, of course, i will not miss this opportunity. I have searched and found the right public transport to go there. ^^

Is there anyone here who has sample of TOEFL papers? I would like to do some revision on these papers as well. ^^

The professor agreed to take me as their student if I pass the MEXT scholarship, but they have only done so in their emails. I cannot receive a written confirmation (Letter of Acceptance) until I have passed all of the stages of the scholarship. I think that this is the same for all universities. But even though I do not have the official confirmation yet, I think that it looks good on my application. :)

Mine was the same as well. So far, i have only received 3 agreements from the professors accepting me into their laboratory. The requirement is, i will need to pass the first screening process( Written and Interview). On the other side, i have gained approval from one of the professors that i have contacted to apply through their university recommendation if i failed the MEXT application(Embassy recommendation). Wish you the best^^

Is there anyone here have past year papers for year 2011 - 2013?

Wow! You have been verbally accepted. I haven't started to think on it although i have made up my mind to get a try on several university (like todai or osaka) due to my research field? How are you approaching professors?

Also, anyone have past year questions from 2011 to 2013? kindly appreciated. =D

But still, i will need to pass the first screening process else all these efforts will just go to waste. I first approached them via email after i have read through all their published papers, description of their researches and topics, journals( if they have any) and lastly comparing with my current intended research topic. If you were wondering on how to write a formal email to approach your professors, just refer to the link below as reference( credit to a senior who had shared this):

Contacting Professor | Dhresta's Corner

I would suggest that you try to approach them right now and give yourself some time and patience to wait for their reply, trust me, most of them will not reply so soon after they received your email but will drag for about 2-7 days and this depending on whether they are free or not. Which field are you going to pursue( If you wouldn't mind to share^_^)?

Request x 3, anyone who has past year papers for year 2011 - 2013, kindly share it here please, and thanks in advance.

Hey P Yk Chong!

After several attempts I found out that the best option is also sending your CV, research aim and abstract of your student (diploma) thesis in attachments. Not a single professor replied me unless I added previously mentioned documents. Also, it is more than wise to check professor's available journals, publications and etc, also you can mention a connection to your research aim or thesis..

Though, this was my case, maybe others have different experiences. I also talked to Jap professor via phone, wonder if this is going to persuade examiners at embassy to choose me,lol

Hey kokwai,sure!

I spoke to him in English.

It was back then when I wrote him my first email and he took some time to reply me. He finally replied me apologising for late reply since he was at one scientific conferrence in Budapest ( Hungary). Hungary is a border country to Slovakia, so I opened google, searched for the number of university hosting that conferrence and called there asking for him.
They brought him and I talked to him, wanted also to meet him in person to discuss my matter, but it wasnt necessary in the end.

Wow, thank you for the sharing. I once thought of calling the professors as well but ended up did not. How is your preparation so far? I'm still doing the past versions of the papers.

You are welcome.

Actually, I am almost done,I just waited for finishing my last state exams. I only need to finish completing some papers, writing a reasearch plan took me most of time .
Deadline for sending the documents for application is May 30 in Slovakia.

Well, I was lucky, otherwise I wouldnt make a call to Japan as it might ruin me :D
