Hi,

1. 「私にお任せあれ!」

What is 任せあれ? I mean, the ending あれ? I would guess an imperative, but I don't see the verb.

2. すると、不思議なことに — 説明のしようがないのだが — ヘビは、まるで庭の水撒き用の太いホースのように・・・

Is this しよう the noun meaning "way of doing something"?

3. 「それがどうかしたの?ここにはそんなことできる人、 掃いて捨てるほどいるだろうに」

What is the function of に at the end?

4. 「みんな、どうかしたんじゃないか!考えてもみてよ。 もし僕が、ジャスティンを襲うなってヘビに言わなけり ゃ 」

Does 考えてもみてよ mean 考えてみてよ, i.e. literally "Try thinking!", with も inserted for emphasis?

1)
imperative of あり(= ある)

2)
It's originally from "し(the -masu stem of する) + よう(a suffix, meaning a way/apperance)", but yes, it's treated as a noun.

3)
adversative conjunction

4)
Exactly.

Thanks,

1) I did consider that possiblity actually, but I don't understand what it means to put that あれ after お任せ. I'm assuming that 任せ is the stem of 任せる. If it's a pattern I've seen before then I must have forgotten it.

3) Would you say that に is comparable to "when" in English "What's the matter with that ... when there must be lots of people here who can do the same?" (The speaker has a special ability that he thinks is no big deal but other people find scary. He thinks lots of people have the same ability, but actually they do not.)

It's an honorific, i.e., 窶堋ィ窶戮窶堋ケ窶堋?窶堙ェ is a bit classical way of saying 窶戮窶堋ケ窶堙??堋ュ窶堋セ窶堋ウ窶堋「.

窶堋?窶堙ゥ ツ【窶猫窶堙ゥツ/ツ催昶?堙ゥツ】

You can think it's an inversion; Even though there must be lots of people here who can do the same, why is it(= having a special ability) a problem?

OK, I see now, thank you.

(Purely FYI, in case it is of interest, "Even though there must be lots of people here who can do the same, why is it a problem?" is not quite correct in English. Replacing "Even though" with "Given that" or "When" fixes it.)

Oh, I see. Good to know. Your answer is correct, then. Sorry for that.:p

Oh, by the way, I forgot to ask... is this essentially the same に as occurs in のに (when used in the sense of "although" etc.)?

Yes, they are the same. に can be used instead of のに in classical Japanese (e.g. 掃いて捨てるほどいるに=掃いて捨てるほどいるのに). ~(よ)うに or ~まいに would be a remnant of it.
