Hello, native English speakers,

I'm making the final exam.

I'd appreciate it if any native speaker would check it.
If you don't understand Japanese, checking the English parts would be enough.

A very small start with 問2...

For me, the comma in "David wants to buy a Christmas present for a very special person, his mother." is not strictly correct. I think I would use a dash. A colon is also a possibility.

You are using $ as currency, and spell "jewelry" the US way, but "favourite" is spelled the British way.

In 1c, I think you mean "his mother" not "her mother".

There should be no space before the question mark in "How much money does David spend on the brooch?"

Thank you very much for your help, eeky. You are always helpful.

That was what I think a native speaker wrote. It's from here (ELC Study Zone: A Special Christmas Present).
It seems that it's the website of a university in Canada.

OK. I'll use a dash instead of the comma.

In 1c, I think you mean "his mother" not "her mother".

Yes. You are right.

There should be no space before the question mark in "How much money does David spend on the brooch?"

Ah, OK. I'll delete it.

Thank you.

.
問7 次の文を,仮定法を用いた一つの文で表しなさい。 2ラ2=4点
Paraphrase each sentence using "if".
① Since I'm not a bird, I can't fly to you.

If he studied hard, he would get good grades at school.

Correct

問8 ( )に当てはまる語句を(a)~(d)より選んで,( )に記号で書き入れなさい。10点
Choose the correct word(s).

① I have a friend ( ) father is a pilot.

(a) who (b) whose (c) that (d) which

The answer to that is B - A and Caren't used in the context of this question for example if the question was "I have a friend ( ) is a pilot" then you use A and C

② The reason ( ) I went to the hospital is to examine my stomach.

(a) whom (b) why (c) where (d) when

B is the correct answer, D would only be used in the past tense, which this question isn't it

③ It ( ) when I got off the bus.

(a) rained (b) rains (c) is raining (d) was raining

A and D would be correct, C would be used in the present tense and B makes it sound like it only rains when you get off a bus!

[quote④ This is the park ( ) we often eat lunch.[/quote]

(a) which (b) that (c) where (d) when

C is the answer to that

⑤ I enjoy ( ) in this river.

(a) swim (b) to swim (c) swimming (d) to swimming]/quote]

C would be the most correct (you could also say "a swim", but that isn't one of the answers, so no need to worry about it)

⑥ My father finished ( ) his car.

(a) wash (b) to wash (c) washing (d) to washing

C would the right answer to that

⑦ Do you mind ( ) door?

(a) close (b) to close (c) closing (d) to closing

C is the answer (you could also say "Shutting", but that isn't an answer, so no need to worry about it, I'm just letting you know)

⑧ I've decided ( ) to France.

(a) go (b) to go (c) going (d) to going

B is right

⑨ Don't ( ) the same mistake again.

(a) make (b) take (c) do (d) have

A is the most correct, some people may say C or D depending on context, but looking at the context of this question I'd say A would be the most correct

⑩ If I had been there at that time, I would ( ) helped you.

(a) be (b) have (c) have been (d) being

B is the answer, C could maybe be used if the question was worded differently, as in "I would have been helping you", but stick with B and you won't go far wrong!

Thanks in advance.

Hirashin

You're welcome, I hope this helped you, if you've got the final exam coming up then good luck, but looking at you're English in previous questions you've asked I am confident you can do it!

I'm making the final exam.

By the way, are you making the exam, or are you doing it? Just wondering, because "I'm making the final exam" could mean you're the one writing the exam, if this is the case then I apologise

Thank you very much for your help, Wardie1993. I really appreciate it.

By the way, are you making the exam, or are you doing it? Just wondering, because "I'm making the final exam" could mean you're the one writing the exam, if this is the case then I apologise

I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself in this thread. I am an English teacher. I'm making the final exam for the subject "English Exercise" for my senior high school students.

Your comments are useful.

窶。B It (ツ ツ ) when I got off the bus.
(a) rained (b) rains (c) is raining (d) was raining
A and D would be correct, C would be used in the present tense and B makes it sound like it only rains when you get off a bus!

Oh, would A be correct here, too? Then I think I should replace it with another choice.

窶。H Don't (ツ ツ ) the same mistake again.
(a) make (b) take (c) do (d) have
A is the most correct, some people may say C or D depending on context, but looking at the context of this question I'd say A would be the most correct

I didn't know that some native speakers say "Don't do the same mistake" or "Don't have the same mistake".
Well, I think I should remove it.

Thank you.

Oh. Canada. I forgot about them. (Hi Canada!) Yes, I think that Canada may use some AmE spellings and some BrE ones. For your students, it may be clearer to stick with one style or the other, unless you have a particular affiliation with Canada.

A few more comments ... (I have not read the other comments above, so there may be some duplication.)

問3

I think that "Put the English words in the correct order." is better for the instruction.

問4

I think that "Translate into Japanese." is better for the instruction.

問5

⑤ I wondered whether 送る necessarily implied "drive" ... but you would know this.

⑦ "I arrived earlier than always" is not very natural English. "earlier than usual" is fine.

⑨ I wondered whether "Do you understand what Tom is saying?" might be a better translation of the Japanese. Again, you would know better than me.

⑯ Does 母の夢 mean "My dream"?

⑱ It should be "Without the Sun, ...".

"no living thing on Earth could live" feels a bit awkward. Perhaps ".... nothing could live on Earth"?

Thank you so much, eeky.

問4

OK. Thank you for the suggestion.

問5

⑤ I wondered whether 送る necessarily implied "drive" ... but you would know this.

Yes. You are right. I should have written "車で送る".

⑦ "I arrived earlier than always" is not very natural English. "earlier than usual" is fine.

OK. I'll delete "always".

⑨ I wondered whether "Do you understand what Tom is saying?" might be a better translation of the Japanese. Again, you would know better than me.

I think that either "what Tom says" or "what Tom is saying" will be OK, depending on the case..

⑯ Does 母の夢 mean "My dream"?

Ouch! I don't know how I made such a foolish mistake.

⑱ It should be "Without the Sun, ...".

"no living thing on Earth could live" feels a bit awkward. Perhaps ".... nothing could live on Earth"?

Oh, really? I think it's from what a native speaker wrote, but I know that native speakers do not always write
good sentences in their own language.

Thank you very much for pointing out a lot of mistakes.

"Without Sun, ..." is wrong. "Without sun, ..." is possible in the sense of "Without sunlight / exposure to the sun", but it seems to be talking about a local circumstance (e.g. plants in a shady part of the garden), not the existence of the celestial body.

"no living thing on Earth could live" is grammatically correct English, but "living thing ... could live" feels repetitious, and also slightly illogical in that "living thing" presupposes that life exists, which is denied by the phrase as a whole.

A couple more comments:

問6

③ FYI, though argued by some to be correct, in practice "John is much taller than I" sounds stilted or pretentious to many native speakers.

問7 I would argue that your paraphrases really have a somewhat different meaning from the original sentences. If I was doing this test, I might not be completely sure what was expected here.

問8

② FYI, the legitimacy of this kind of use of "reason why" is questioned by some. Also, the sentence sounds as if you will be examining your own stomach. Probably it should be "... to have my stomach examined".

Thank you for your further help, eeky.

I know most native speakers don't say "than I" today. But some books say that
"than I" is grammatically correct. So I have to tell my students about that, too.

And Tom, who was an American friend of mine and passed away two years ago,
used to write "than I" instead of "than me".

問7 I would argue that your paraphrases really have a somewhat different meaning from the original sentences. If I was doing this test, I might not be completely sure what was expected here.

In my Japanese instruction, there's a phrase "仮定法を用いた一つの文で", which means "in one sentence using the subjunctive mood".
So I think what is expected is clear to the students.

Thank you.

Hirashin

In my Japanese instruction, there's a phrase "仮定法を用いた一つの文で", which means "in one sentence using the subjunctive mood".
So I think what is expected is clear to the students.

I guess it may hinge on the amount of flexibility allowed by 表しなさい, which you would understand much better than me. As far as the English instruction is concerned, I don't think I would personally accept "If I were a bird, I could fly to you" as a "paraphrase" of "Since I'm not a bird, I can't fly to you", and similarly with the other sentence. The meanings seem too different.

Thank you for your comment, eeky.

I didn't put the English instruction to the question. How would you suggest
I should put the instruction? (Am I saying it right? If not, please correct my
sentence.)

English is always a puzzle to me. (sigh)

Hirashin

Personally, if it was me, I think I would give an example question/answer pair to show the kind of answers that are expected. However, you may wish to get a second opinion about this as it is a somewhat subjective point. Perhaps other people might find the current question clearer than I do.

③ It ( ) when I got off the bus.
(a) rained (b) rains (c) is raining (d) was raining
I came across this forum just a minute ago and decided to register so I can help you if possible. Eeky has already covered almost everything I could find with grammatical issues; however I noticed that you asked whether A would in fact be correct in this sentence, in reply to an earlier poster saying A/D are both correct. Both answers in this case, are indeed correct, however there is a difference in the meaning of the sentence "It rained when I got off the bus" versus "It was raining when I got off the bus". For this sentence I would say that "it was raining" will probably be encountered more frequently, as "it rained when I got off the bus" implies that it did not rain until the time at which this person got off the bus. Usually, "It rained when I got off the bus" has the same meaning as "It began to ran after I got off the bus", in contrast to "It was raining" which implies that it was already raining, prior to the person getting off of the bus. Hopefully, I helped a little bit. :D
