MEXT Scholarship 2012

Hello university recommendation applicants! Most of us here at this thread are talking about the 2012 MEXT through embassy application. So please don't get confused with our dates! LOL. I think there is another thread about university application, you guys should also check that one out. lots of useful info there.

Anyway, I called my embassy again. They are so not giving info. LOL. I wanna leave before APril 1 because if i do get this scholarship, Todai registration is at April 2nd already! I don't have enough time to settle properly.

I've read somewhere that you basically go 2 days before you start. Which i think is a bit rough, you need time to settle in. Then again for people who need a bit of support particularly with language, its probably good to start earlier so you can get the help you need in day to day life.

Ok, so from what i gather from the discussion in the monbukagakusho group on Facebook (which if you've not joined yet you should), Final results aren't out until at least the 16th of Feb. I thought it was mid January to mid February - but that extra month is a long wait. Anyone on here heard anything different.

Guys,

I'm curious. For those who received letters of admission (not the LOA in august) from your universities, how long did it state your research? Am I the only one given 6 months???

I think you shouldn't worry about that. My mentor has said to me that I will be 6 months on language study program and then another 6 months on "research student" category. After that I will (try) to enter master degree or doctoral degree program and extend the scholarship, and that we will talk about that in Japan as we have a lot of time for that. So I guess that's normal procedure because he is aware that my ultimate goal is doctoral degree and that without getting into doctoral course after all it wouldn't make much sense for me to go and study in Japan.
But I guess we have to go step by step patiently. :)

Now, I have a question myself :)

I haven't got any info from embassy yet, not even tentative one. But, my professor told me that "my enrollment in Daigakuin is in progress, everything is ok, although the whole process will be completed in February" and also that I should prepare for going in Japan "without any hesitation". And he also connected me to a person who is in charge for dormitories. So I guess I will get the scholarship after all...
Now, I am married and I would like to travel with my wife and to get into a dormitory for married couples. The procedure is a little bit confusing. Everybody suggests that I should go myself first, then apply for "spouse visa" for my wife and then wait (and we all know that waiting is killing me :) ) for 1 to 3 months to get one. And then when she finally arrive in Japan, if there is available room for married couples in the dorm, we could transfer there. that's how I've been told by the lady in charge.
I wonder If there is any possibility that my wife come with me, lets say, on a tourist visa, get in the dorm with me and then apply for spouse visa on spot which allows her more options in Japan (to do some part time job or similar staff). When I asked the lady in charge she said that she doesn't know that much and that I should ask someone who had an actual experience. But she also pointed out that it would be very difficult if not impossible to get the ticket for my wife on a same flight I will go. When will we actually know about the flight details? I have so many questions... If there is anybody who took family with him/herself or knows how the procedure goes with the dorms, flights and visas please share the experience.
Thanks in advance

just recieved an email from the Insternational Student office of Engineering Department (Todai) that attached some files informing the new reduction in MEXT stipend . The information is quite interesting as it shows that even all MEXT students of Todai will not recieve the same amount of stipend rather it will vary depending on their location of campus. And the hioghest someone can earn is 1,45,000. However addiitional brusaries of 1000,2000 or 3000 are provided based on your degree type or research.
The files only contain information regarding todai, and i think principal amount will vary a lot for other regions as it has been mentioned in a doc that since 2009 the MEXT stipend is decided based on economical condition of the city rather than all MEXT holder receiving same...(which actually make sense)
the mail also has listed the MEXT students enrolled in the Engineering department with their ID and time of enrollment(April,October). I found my name in April entry though i would like to change it for October session.

Thanks waitingiskillingme!

Anyway, regarding your concern, most of the people I knew first came to Japan by themselves and then brought the family soon after. It didn't take long. Japanese can get quite doubting when it comes to visas that don't match the real purpose. I wonder what visa exception your country has with Japan? She can easily get the dependent visa (spouse visa is technically for wives of Japanese). Are you also going to Todai? Which campus? I emailed Todai and they said they WOULD email soon about the dorms but they haven't yet.

To Neuro11,

Did Hongo Office email you regarding the dorm? I'm going to be in Komaba and they told me to wait a bit more for their email regarding the dorm.

Thanks guys!

No they did not. In fact this is the only email i received from Todai after confirmation......

If it doesn't take too long then we should be fine, thanks :) I actually got a call from Embassy on Friday and they confirmed that I have got scholarship!!! I will have to wait for official letter which will come this week, dough. Then I will call consulate and ask for a procedure for my wife. But, little by little I am leaving the idea of going with her on a same flight as it seems to be very difficult to arrange... My country have a new agreement about visas with Japan and we doesn't need visas any more for 90 days stay in Japan. That's why I came up with the idea... I'm going to Mie Daigaku, that's Tsu-shi, Mie-ken (close to Nagoya). I am in contact with them already regarding dorms but as I said they cannot help me about my wife

Late February.... I was hoping to hear from them around 15-20th the latest... :(

I haven't heard either from them or my university so I'm starting to freak out xD.

dint you hear anything in december??? i mean you are saying you heard nothing since you submitted LOA letter in August??

I heard from them in December informing me that MEXT had approved my application but nothing else since.

Haven't I heard from them in December, probably I would have committed suicide by now xD.

Wow, congratulations! Haven't heard anything from my embassy though. And it's nearly February. >.<

I guess we have to wait a little more... :S

As I said before this scholarship is like a master's degree on patience.

@Akesha we have already done the Masters in patience. Its time we start calling it the Post Doc. in Patience.

Hi there everyone!

I found this forum long before, but I had some troubles with registering. Nice to see you friends.
My name is Bota, I am from Kazakhstan. I am also in research student 2012, embassy recommendation. I also passed the second screening, and now I am also making masters diploma on patience, waiting for the official confirmation of MEXT ^^. Embassy assured me, they will send official information till 9th February. So I am checking my e-mail like every 2 minutes, really tired of waiting... ><

I have LoA from Todai, Graduate School of Human Studies. Is someone going there??? I would be glad to make new friends, study and have fun together. On the beginning of this year, I contacted to my school and International department also promised to send information about housing as soon as they have new one for 2012. Well, still nothing heard from them. Do you know friends, JASSO Dorms in Tokyo are closed? So international department, informed me housing of research students will be different from this year. We have only 2 ways: 1. University's help or 2. making our own search, which is quite difficult for me, as I am gonna live for the first time in Japan. So I hope, my university or professor will help me with housing. What about you? Is there any information about housing from your schools?

Also, embassy sent me official information about stipend. So it's 143 000 for researchers. For those who studies in expensive cities, they will add 3000 yen. So I guess I am gonna get 146 000 monthly.

As embassy explained me, now I am waiting official information from MEXT about my location in Japan, shortly whether I am going to Todai or not. But it's for sure, that I got this MEXT scholarship, only need to wait MEXT approval for Todai... I got 2 LoA's. One from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and one from Todai. But embassy asked me to choose only one university, and reject to the other. So as in my application, Todai was the first choice, decision was atarimae ))

Anyone, If you got official information from MEXT, please post here! Onegai ))

Well, previous applicants from my country, assured me, that if I have LoA, then nothing to worry. MEXT definitely approves it. But I am worried anyway ><

If I remember some more details about this, I will post again.

宜しく御願いします。

Hello Bota!

I'm going to Komaba as well! :) I'm also waiting for them to send any details about the accommodation. Did they ask you to send a picture along with a form? So far I haven't heard anything. Goodness it's Feb! So many results. Even JLPT results are coming out. So anxious!

Hi Bota, my LOA is also from Todai and the department of Engineering just informed me that my name exists in their list of April entry, nothing else. SOmeone said here that it will take end of Feb to receive any other info. i think thats quite true.

Hey guys, thank you for information. I am glad to know that I am not suffering here alone ^^.  Well, about accommodation, I asked embassy, they said I had to wait for an official approval of MEXT and then proceed on getting a room or whatever from school. When I asked international department of my school (human studies) they kindly asked to wait because there is no official information about accommodation for 2012 yet, so they promised to contact me ASAP. Well I also asked my professor about all this stuff, he assured me that Todai accepted me, they even sent LoA so from Todai side everything is settled, but it is MEXT who says the last word... Professor asked me to wait MEXT approval and as soon as I get it I should contact to him and international department...
Well as you can see I am kinda pushing here everyone, embassy girl  definitely hates me, cos I am annoying her since   December with lots of questions ^^
The problem is I ve gotta quit my job, and my company keeps pushing me with final decision, cos they need to search new staff, so that is the worst. If I lose this scholarship and if I quit my job I will have nothing... So komatteru ><
About picture and application, I sent all my documents including my picture to the school only once. In the beginning when they considered LoA thing. Well I guess my school is waiting MEXT's last word...
BTW on one of my pushing day embassy girl said smth like if you have LoA from the university MEXT mostly does not change it, but MEXT has a right to change. This "buts" kinda annoying... Well, believe it or not, I even asked embassy if I should  inform my company about Leaving, embassy answered i should. So this is the only thing which gives me some hope. I mean, come on embassy is the Embassy, they do not suggest to quit job if nothing is settled right? Although they may kindly apologize and inform about failure.... That would be a nightmare...
Sorry for a long speech... I am just really anxious ^^

Hi, Bota. i am in the same boat though totally in a different way. Not going to explain it now, anyway.
Regarding your job, i would suggest DONT QUIT THE JOB. there is nothing like "Final Words". all you should beleive is a formal paper. so that in any case you can ask for compensation. And Embassy is just Embassy whereas MEXT is the ministry. If MEXT cancels your application(which i wholeheartedly wish and pray to not happen) then embassy would do nothing but doing useless apologize. So i suggest you to wait for final confirmation.

Yeah of course, neuro11. I am not going to quit job only because embassy told so. I explained the situation to my boss and they are also waiting final word of MEXT ^^ I just meant, Embassy is not insane to play with someones life and suggest to quit job if they are not sure about the whole situation. I was just trying to put myself together and think positive ^^ Anyway 80% is over, only 20% left and we are pretty close to get this scholarship. 待つしかない…

Hi guys
I've been following your thread for sometime and thought I'd get involved.
Seems im making a lot of rogress in my postdoc course in patience too, I've managed to avoid pulling out my hair and nails so far but I dont know how long I can keep this up :\ !!
Anyway, same situation, waiting on the final word from MEXT though it seems my prospective university (Kagoshima -anyone else hoping to go there?) will likely be accepting me. But, of course, untill I hear it from MEXT I'm not going to start jumping in joy - dont want to tempt fate and all that.
Could someone link me to this other forum on facebook that was mentioned earlier? I'm not on facebook but im sure one of my mates will let me use their profiles to have a look at what is being said.

Best of luck everyone.

since from the equation we get that D=-48, then I suppose something should be done with (2a-b)(2b-a), or not? please help
