MEXT Scholarship 2012

But isn't there less positions available?

AFAIK, there was 80-ish candidates from University Recommendation from Indonesia that went to Japan in 2011. If you compared that to 29 candidates from Embassy Recommendation in that year, the chance for being accepted through Univ Recommendation is much higher.

Hi, does anyone know whether all of those who will get selected finally, need to leave in April mandatorily or can delay it to go in October ???

Depends on Language, what you put down, as well as whats best for the university. i'm not sure if we get a choose in the matter

i got my admissions letter package from my uni, and it's asking me to send ID pictures and stuff already. :) feels real! and i need to apply to the dormitory!!

That's great news! ! Congratulations! !

Which university did you apply to?
I can't wait to know from mine! !

Thanks guys! I got the package from Todai Komaba office. I'm only admitted for 6 months though! Does that mean that I need to get into the MA program right after?? Does anyone know if it's relatively easy to extend the duration of research? I'm worried because what if they assume I can speak good Japanese, and can do research normally? I have level 2 but quite frankly that won't get me anywhere near a 15-page paper. I honestly thought that the normal process was Nihongo for some months, and then research of 1 year before MA. I really don't want to get into MA that fast, I want to lessen the language barrier first. o.o

Hi mitch2526, i was wondering whether you have applied for a MA degree taught in English or Japaneese. If it is japaneese then they would assume that you know japaneese. Six month language course is a mandatory one for all and probably will not allow you more time just because your course is taught in Japaneese.
Now if your course is taught in English which is same as me(though i am in Phd),then it really does not matter. the 6 month language course is just for the help in daily use. The course is fully taught in English and communication with supervisor is also in English.
Now i think you are admitted for six month because you need to attend a entrance exam at the end of this period. In the package (containg my Supervisor's acceptance letter) Todai sent me there were booklet of rules and regulation. Where it was clearly written that all MS/Phd student must pass the entrance exam held in October/ April to continue study towards degree. Actually you stay as a Research student upto this 6 month period when you study japaneese language, prepare for your entrance exam and do some research work in your supervisor lab. Then you sit for exam after six month. if you pass you start your normal degree and if you fail then you need to pack your bag :(

Hey i've just been doing more research into the matter of timing. This only applies to people wishing to study a masters degree and are required to sit an exam if you wish to do so. Basically we all know That the academic year starts in april, which is when those of us who need it will start language training (ending in October). After this, we enter into the university as a research student for 1 semester (ending in april). The problem i see is that most exams to upgrade to a masters course are conducted in October - and i believe only in October at the university i wish to attend. Does this effect anyone else, or has anyone maybe heard anything?

Or is the language and research at the same time?

Hi,i can confirm about Todai that( Engineering Department at least) the process is true for both MSc. and Phd students. And both of them sit for same entrance exam (i mean same questions.) And my supervisor wrote me that i will be admitted as a research student and my status "Research" will not change before i pass entrance exam in October.

so do you have to do language as well? when do you start that, and when do you start the research
yes , If i go i to todai, i have to do language course and it will start as soon as i arrive in japan in April and probably will last for 6 motnhs.. And i need to study myself to prepare for entrance exam on October. Besides this i will do some basic research in the laboratory of my supervisor. As soon as i pass the entrance exam in october i can start my Phd research in a full motion and then i will be a Phd student not a research student. Infact my supervisor stated this way : Because you can not attend the entrance exam in April (there are two entrance exams held each year,April and October)because it will be too late to register by the time you are here, i think you need to be admitted as a Research student first.
So it seems if it would be possible to register for April exam and attend it then we could start doing Phd without even being a research std.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm applying for a course taught in Japanese.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to extend the Japanese lessons, I just thought that it would be skipped together on my part because I was only admitted for "6 months". I assumed that they would expect me to do nothing but research from April to Sept. I was expecting 6-months of intensive Japanese and no research from April to Sept. Then research+entrance exam Oct-Feb, and if I pass the MA exam, get into the program April next year. Maybe that's assuming too much?

Anyone else in Komaba? I think Komaba and Hongo have different systems?

It would be great if could have some MEXT holders(previous year) here. We have a lot to know at the moment....

I'm really curious as to what will come next for all of us. What are the pre-departure preparations we must do? Will we meet the other scholars from our respective countries?
There's so much that is unclear regarding our scholarship.

Waiting

Hello everyone, I finally found this forum.
I was apply for MEXT scholarship in Mid december 2011 and now waiting for the announcement of university result, hopefully i can get the scholarship. but i dont know the possibilities for me to get the scholarship. I was apply from Japan, because Iam now exchange student here in Japan, I met the professor and already submit my application.
hope for the best result everyone Ganbarimas..📣

Hey guys.

I too have applied for MEXT scholarship 2012, October admissions. I went for the University recommendation route. So far, I have applied to 3 Universities - TITech, Todai and Keio U. I'm not very optimistic though, due to my average scores in the Bachelor's course I'm pursuing. Let's see how it goes.

What is everyone hoping to study? and also is it masters, PHD or research?

My field of study is Artificial Intelligence (Natural Language Processing), and Knowledge Based Systems. In TITech, I have applied to an integrated dual degree program (Master's + Ph.D.) in the above mentioned fields and is of 5 years duration. In Keio, I have applied to the IGP Master's program of 2 years duration in the same fields, but I plan to go for a Ph.D. later anyway. In University of Tokyo, I have applied to a somewhat different course, M.A.S. in ITASIA.

Final Word

Hi guys,

Does anyone know when exactly the final results comes out for MEXT ?

I thought it was February, but some persons have already gotten final confirmation and have heard back from schools about placement etc.

The embassy contacted me in December and asked me to confirm my intentions to got to Japan on the scholarship as it was now in the final approval stages.

I confirmed and have not heard anything back from them as yet.

Do I wait till February to get that final answer ?

The wait is a bit frustrating.

Not only frustrating but i kept forgetting about them. I have to keep asking myself. Am i really going in less than 3 months? We cant really do any serious preparation without final words from the university@embassy.

You guys are talking about the April admissions, right? Coz I've applied for October admissions, and I don't think the results are announced before Feb.
