期限 ｖｓ 期限切れ

WWWJDIC lists the second meaning of 期限 as 期限切れ,

I was wondering is it true that 期限切れ is a more "formal" term ?

For example what is the difference between these sentences? :

締め切り期限を過ぎてから彼女はレポートを提出した。
締め切り期限ぎれを過ぎてから彼女はレポートを提出した。

すべてのレポートは期限を守って提出されなければならない。
すべてのレポートは期限ぎれを守って提出されなければならない。

最終期限が近づいている。
最終期限ぎれが近づいている。

I don't think they're the same.
期限 is a deadline. e.g. "the deadline is this Friday at 4pm".
期限切れ means "past the deadline" or "expired" - 期限切れのパスポット

So when you say 期限を過ぎて, it doesn't make sense to replace with 期限切れ.
Similarly, they are not swappable here:
期限切れを防ぐ = avoid becoming late/going overdue
期限を守る = keep to the deadline

The last two examples you give might be the closest - one says the deadline is close, one says you're close to being past-deadline/expired.

I think something like 期限切れにならないように is probably most natural for avoiding the expiration date.
