Hello,

I'm from Canada.
I'm a graduate student in architecture would like to apply to grad school in Japan through the MEXT Scholarship 2012. I will greatly appreciate it if you guys could give me some advices to higher my chances of obtaining the scholarship.

I've already finished all the requirements.

Q1: How much do base qualification on school grades? I am worried. It is around B-, and I heard they prioritize school grades and look for A students. Besides my grades, I am confident in my proposal, my Japanese (intermediate) and my portfolio (architecture students keep a portfolio with all their works: hopefully I can show it if I get an interview)

Q2: Should I write my proposal in Japanese? I know proving my Japanese ability is important. I wonder if I should translate my essay into Japanese, but I am also worried that my poor Japanese language skills will lower the quality of my proposal. Perhaps I could attach the English version? but I dont want it to be messy. I recently found a Japanese private tutor who could assist me in translating it into an authentic Japanese Essay, but not sure if they want the proposal to be pure effort of the applicants, and no interferences at all.

Q3: Should I quickly contact a Japanese professor and see if I have any luck completing my letter of acceptance in advance, in hopes to higher my chances? (finding a Professor to surpervise my research) Although it isn't required at this moment.

My weakness: mediocre school grades
My strengths: decent proposal, some Japanese language ability (around intermediate level), good school portfolio (school works - architecture)

My university choices are 1. Tokyo university 2. Waseda 3. Nihon 4. Meiji

I am a hard-working, and strong-willed person who have dreamed to study my major in Japan since forever. This is a very important opportunity for me. I would really appreciate your feedbacks!!

*The dead in is on the 20th, I have about 5 more days to revise or do anything before that.
Thank you so so much!!

Hi,
I'm new here, too. I submitted my application last week.
I'll try to answer your questions. hope it is in time!
Q1: My undergraduate GPA was only 3.02, but still passed the 1st screening before.
amazing!
Q2: Last time i wrote it in Japanese. This time i wrote in English, then translated it to Japanese and had someone proof read it.
Q3: Yes, you should have contacted a professor first. I showed my proposals to my potential supervisor and he made some revision for me. I think it adds some credits if you mention this at your interview.
Hope this helps.

Hello Starrygarden, I am from Hong Kong too. Last year I applied the scholarship and failed to get any interview. This year I applied as well but I am not confident because I didn't change very much my application. I plan to apply again next year. I have sent some questions to you through the private message box. Hope you can help me...

Hello starrygarden,
Thank you for pointing out! Ive just submitted my applications 2 days ago, but its still helpful in knowing that I should start contacting a professor. Im actually Hong Kong Canadian, and I've heard they only accept 4 people per year which seems alot harder compare to Canada. And perhaps they expect a higher Japanese level for Chinese people. Is the GPA meter in HK out of 4? if so, your scores aren't bad at all! anyway good luck to you too!(加油)

Hi Mokstar,

Yes, they 'used to' choose 4 ppl only, and they chose 4 pp too last year.
However, only 3 ppl were finally accepted in feb due to a sudden budget cut, and i was the 4th person. what....
Moreover, the 3rd person actually quited but still i couldn't fill the space because, just starting from last year, the extra space had to be shared with applicants worldwide instead of being replaced locally. I still have a chance though but i applied it again for safety sake.

Hello starrygarden,

Omygoodness, sorry to hear that you got cut right off the line.. that is very messed up.. well, have confident that u'll make this yr! by the way, I haven't got back my notification for an interview yet, but could I start contacting my profs without a certificate from MEXT if I want to? I am really confused about this step. I heard some people already gotten a Letter of Acceptance even before the interview?.. and does getting one means ur basically accepted into their university? I don't know how to start contacting them, would you mind sharing your experience how you contacted those professors? much thanks!

Hi Mokstar,
Yes you can start contacting your profs without a cert. You just mail them telling them your background and purpose. However, be prepared that some of them will just ignore you (they will even you have a cert). It is possible that their mailboxes were screened by their secretaries, who will just pass your mail to the international offices etc. In the past you could get a letter of acceptance before passing the 1st screening. The rule was changed a few years ago and the univ. won't issue the LOA without seeing your cert. from the embassy.
Yes, getting one means you are basically accepted. I got 2 too, but.... you know what i mean.

Hi, this is my first post here.
for Indonesia the test had been held yesterday followed by interview for applicant.
For non english speaking country, just want to inform that this year seems like you need to seat in both for Japanese and English test. (I heard somewhere that before you can choose you can take the Japanese test or not)
In my country usually 100 people passed the document selection. but for this year (maybe because of the march earthquake), only 70 people are selected.
if possible maybe you guys can share information also. I hope we can all get selected as monbusho scholar next february 👍

Today I went to embassy and left all the documents, Yei! :D

My english exam is the 24 of this month, I will only be taking the this (means I have to do my best on it) but I also heard that the past years you could choose between doing or not doing the japanese exam, maybe they have another selection procedure because they did`t asked me about it, anyway I know that I could not have passed it.

The embassy was quite full around 12 students just today at the time I was there.
well I will tell about how many postgraduate students applied the 24!

Could any body give me a glimpse of the material for the english exam? is it hard or is at the same level of the one at the page?

more or less it is similar with the problem sheet that available for download in studyjapan.go.jp. the "find which sentence is wrong" is quite challenging. good luck taking the exam.

Hey all,

Nice to meet all of you! Let's fight for the MEXT scholarship together!
Any other Malaysians who applied for this too? Yoroshiku! :)

Greetings from Honduras!

The embassy has just announced through email to those who have passed the first selection, we will have the exams next monday, the 20th. As I understand, it is a writen examination, isn't it? Does someone know if the interview is applied the same day?

Good luck to all!

hi, in case of Indonesia the interview schedule announced the day after tomorrow you get the selection notification. it is held in the next day after the test until all applicant get interviewed.
however since the treatment is different depend on your country embassy discretion, I am not sure it will be the same.

what about the English exam, was it like 2010 or was it like 2007-2009?

It was more like the 2007-2009's... Identical format!

Oh my! I`m a little bit scared about it, I totally depend of the english exam. Well I`ll give my best :D

Hey!! I hope all has been good to you on this test! good luck on the interview.

by the way what are you majoring on?

(, it's bad news for me, i tried 2007-2009 exams, my results was very bad, but when I tried 2010 exam my result was good. So the thing I want to know is, this year tests is as difficult as the tests in 2007-2009, or they only changed the format of the paper and the tests are still easy like 2010?

I understand very well your feeling Akmal... It was similar to me, the result of the 2010 exam was the best... Unfortunately, the 2011ツ´s was as difficult as the 2007-2009ツ´s for me. I hope that it will be easy for you, we all know that this kind of exams are like a lottery... They do not show the real English level you actually have :(
