Hey Rube :)

OK, first - Let's take a breath. Let's start over.

When I saw you post this:

"I'm a bit sad because I was hoping that there was a cool place to talk to people who were more like me, successful middle aged men with families who were immersed in Japan..."

I felt for you bro. Mike and Chido were being a little harsh on you, you had suddenly decided to delete your account, and you had openly admitted that you felt sad.

So I came in and posted what I felt was a comforting, smoothing post, calling you a brother and friend, and reminding you (and MIKE and CHIDO and EVERYONE that we ALL have made - and still make - such silly mistakes.)

I thought that my post would have mellowed out the situation. Brother, you're talking to a peace-maker here. A fellow long-term medical-herb-bud-toker (not in Japan of course, no way, but back in San Francisco, where I had a LEGAL medical prescription.) Just like you, I'm a family man fully-immersed in Japan. My Japanese wife and I are blessed with 3 healthy happy wonderful children. You and I would probably become good friends if we met up. Someone who actually cares about other people. I care about you, a fellow human being, and that's why I invested energy writing that initial post, so you wouldn't walk away mad.

So, when you replied kinda' harshly to my initial post, I felt hurt that you couldn't appreciate the vibe my post was trying to convey. And then, of course, hurt leads to anger. So then I became rude to you. I'm sorry about that, really. I shouldn't have become so rude to you. Seriously, please forgive me for what I subsequently posted.

Let's turn an initial negative to an eventual positive.

BTW - My ignorance about phone input style is a result of the fact that I don't use a cell phone. How about that for a surprise? Living in Japan with no cell phone. That's totally rare.

Also, if you re-read Mike's post carefully, he didn't say you seemed FOB, he said you seemed to be NOT FOB. See, we humans all make silly mistakes both when writing AND reading. It's evidence that we're not robots. Thank goodness: we're humans!

Listen, how about a fresh start, and maybe, just maybe, the end result will be you'll be pleasantly surprised to discover that what you came to this forum looking for actually exists: a group of very kind, middle-aged, fully-immersed in Japan (bones to be buried in Japanese soil) humans who know how to forgive and how to have a good time together.

What do you say: Fresh Start?

Sincerely,

Steve :)

I admit I got your posts mixed up with those of the other guy in the thread, my bad, but the fact is that Mike is an *** and came to that thread to strout his stuff. I looked at his posts directed to other posters and more of the same. Just another a-hole who thinks he's special.

Nah bro, that's not how to accept an olive branch. C'mon, a little bowing is needed...

I think that if you look deeper into your heart, go deeper inside, what you really want to say now is,

"Wow, right on. And come to think of it, before passing any further incorrect judgment on Mike, if I took the time to actually look through the FIRST 2,700 posts this kind soul posted here, it would become clear that he has donated SO much of his time and energy helping people here, again and again and again, (people who don't use the search function before posting, people who except to be spoon-fed everything, people who are too lazy to put in the effort to learn Japanese, people who act like experts but are not, people who lie to hide their flaws, people who don't say thank you for the kind help received, etc.) that if you add up all that, Mike can be forgiven for the fact that his NEXT 2,700 posts might have gradually become kinda' stern. He calls things straight-out. If he implies that a topic has been over-discussed, chances are it's true."

"Instead of getting mad at Mike for speaking so honestly, I should simply have said, 'Well Mike, that picture kinda' hurts my feelings, because I'm just trying to share my experiences with folks here.' If I had replied simply like that, instead of with anger and rudeness, Mike probably would have simply re-iterated his point, that this topic has been discussed a lot already, no big deal. No fight. On to the next topic, hopefully a subject that's new and useful."

"Mike I want to apologize to you, and to Chido, for having gotten all riled up. I came here looking for long-term family-people like myself, and that's exactly what you are. I would like to start fresh, with the hope of building a the foundation for a long-term friendship. What do you say guys, can we have a Fresh Start?" :)

That's the kind of Positive Vibration I'm hoping you're going to manifest now Rube. Rastaman Vibration seen, IRIE. Positive! Please, prove me right, I'm betting on you opening up your heart a little more to the possibility that the guys you initially got into a fight with could very well turn out to be good friends of yours for our remaining 50 years here in Japan. :)

Please, consider composing a heartfelt letter re-introducing yourself, and your hopes for friendship. I want to meet you and become friends with you, AND, I want you to become friends with my friends. This is a real community of good people, let's make our time here bear good fruit brother! :)

I've written enough, there's a fork in the road of destiny here, the rest is up to you to decide with your own free will. Which way will you choose? :)

Apologize to Mike? lol. Right.

How about you speak for yourself and leave Mike out of it. Mike is a big boi he can speak for himself.

I'm not here for friendships or little get togethers, just for conversation. And honestly I'm glad that my posts invoke the kind of reaction they did because they work like a filter, now I know very quickly that I don't want to have conversations with Mike or you if you keep up this nonsense about rastaman vibration.

Hey Rube, all you had to do was concede that you did what most new members do and did not research your thread before posting. It has been done and discussed. Surely you know the in' and out's of the forum world. No one is going to take a noob too seriously, until they get to know you.

2313838542_2d4fa13015_ogif-1.webp

I have seen tons of people come here, say they lived here since before the dinosaurs were around , only after reading their posts start to wonder how much truth there is.

Sure you may have lived here for 20 years and have valuable insight for the forum, but until your dues are paid don't expect people to believe everything you say as gospel. You know what they say, "respect is earned, not given", this applies in society as much as it does in the hierarchy of any community, internet or not. So coming out all guns blazing is not going to get you anywhere.

Oh , and BTW I also coped a mouthful from Mike when I first joined. But that does not change my opinion that he has better insight than most on being foreign in Japan and don't dismiss his job as a truck driver so easily, most gad students would not be able to do his job. It is not as simple as getting in a truck and driving, that is easy part( Don't confuse the fact that I am not saying that driving a truck in Japan is easy) you have all the paperwork that has to be done "IN JAPANESE", be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, abide by unwritten rules without causing trouble in a typical Japanese workplace and just basically have the ability to perform a job that is not of your native tongue on par with natives. If you have not worked in a situation like this then you should really not judge IMO.

You sound like you have a good outlook on Japan and really would fit in well with the way a lot of long timers do think here. I just think you should take a moment to reflect IMO. I gather you teach English, and it would be good to hear from someone who has stuck it out that long in that proffesion.

All Mike had to do was not be an a-hole to somebody he has had no communication with. I don't really care about what you think "noobs" should do or your version of forum pecking order, that's your thing, not mine.

I'll tell you right now, I'll bring up other topics that have been touched on before to start them fresh, if somebody doesn't want to talk about the topic then they don't have to. Mike decided to come in and be an ***.

(by the way, searched like you suggested, looks like the last time a thread was done about it was 4 years ago)

I have seen tons of people come here, say they lived here since before the dinosaurs were around , only after reading their posts start to wonder how much truth there is.

Goody for you.

Sure you may have lived here for 20 years and have valuable insight for the forum, but until your dues are paid don't expect people to believe everything you say as gospel.

Dues? Grow up, seriously. That's just silly.

You know what they say, "respect is earned, not given", this applies in society as much as it does in the hierarchy of any community, internet or not. So coming out all gus blazing is not going to get you anywhere.

Here's what I know, if I post here long enough I'll attract like minded people who don't care about your pecking order. You can play your game but it's assinine to expect people to care about it.

Oh , and BTW I also coped a mouthful from Mike when I first joined. Wow, working in Japan. Impressive.

You sound like you have a good outlook on Japan and really would fit in well with the way a lot of long timers do think here. I just think you should take a moment to reflect IMO. Reflect on what? Mike is an a-hole to people, not interested in him or people defending that or this whole "social order" nonsense that you seem very serious about.

So either you forget your little facebook attitude and pecking order based on join date when you talk to me or I just won't be interested in having a conversation with you. I can't take people like that seriously.

For the record, I'm not an English Teacher, my background is film and tv. But that's probably another jibe from somebody who thinks they are being clever.

This is awesome.. Look in a mirror dude.
Guy I read the incredible ignorant bullshit you wrote about Japanese women. Not interested in you or your kind of thinking.

A link would be nice, since I have no idea what you are talking about.

Hey, I didn't make the rules, that the way things are... on any forum, not just here.

You have every right to do that, no one is stopping you. But I will refer you to the fact that nobody cares for topics being done over and over again and people will say so, that is something you can't stop. So if you want to keep swimming against the current , be my guest, just expect to have people comment the way they did. Again I am just stating the way the world works, surely you understood that?

(by the way, searched like you suggested, looks like the last time a thread was done about it was 4 years ago)
Funny , I found one where the last post was only a few months ago and another that was two years ago. Not to mention all that other discrimination threads where the topic continues to come up.
Gaijin or.......
Gaijin or.......

Goody for you.
Thanks.

Dues? Grow up, seriously. That's just silly.
Hey , I didn't decide in which dirrection the earth rotates and I certainly didn't decide this either, it is a fact of life on an internet forum. I was hoping you would have already realized this without me saying, I was mistaken.

Here's what I know, if I post here long enough I'll attract like minded people who don't care about your pecking order. You can play your game but it's assinine to expect people to care about it.
Not my pecking order and I don't care for games much either. But ignorance is bliss, so you keep on with that it seems to be working well so far...

Wow, working in Japan. Impressive.
You must be a pretty special person. If you could , would you be able to tell us how special you are?

Reflect on what? Mike is an a-hole to people, not interested in him or people defending that or this whole "social order" nonsense that you seem very serious about.
Forget I said it, you obviously don't have a clue.

So either you forget your little facebook attitude and pecking order based on join date when you talk to me or I just won't be interested in having a conversation with you. I can't take people like that seriously.
When you come off like you did, no , no one will take you seriously. That why I said you should reflect a little, sorry , I take that back. You don't seem to grasp how your attitude affects "other" people to take you seriously. And if it was just my little "facebook attitude" , why did everyone in the thread react the way they did? You do have mirrors where you live?

For the record, I'm not an English Teacher, my background is film and tv. But that's probably another jibe from somebody who thinks they are being clever.
So that is your background, but what do you do to make a living, earn money?

This sort of BS is why I wish forum join dates and post counts were not displayed. If we had the option I would have disabled mine long ago.

Hey, I didn't make the rules, that the way things are... on any forum, not just here.

Those aren't in the TOU. I understand you feel preasured to conform to them, I don'T.

But I will refer you to the fact that nobody cares for topics being done over and over again and people will say so

So you're saying that you adults with all the will power you have can't avoid topics they are sick of? Impressive.

Funny , I found one where the last post was only a few months ago and another that was two years ago. Not to mention all that other discrimination threads where the topic continues to come up.

Congrats, you are a power searcher

When you come off like you did, no , no one will take you seriously.

I don't take you seriously at all, of course I'm not worried about strangers taking me seriously on the net.

So that is your background, but what do you do to make a living, earn money?

I work in film and TV.

A link would be nice, since I have no idea what you are talking about.

I have to apologize for that, in fact it wasn't you, the search tool displayed another person's comments like they were yours. I take that back and apologize. But I read through a bunch of your posts and you're just another person calling people idiots all over the place with an attitude that I'm not interested in.

Ok apology accepted. I cannot say always because I have had my share of drunk posting/bad mood posting, but I usually refrain from calling someone an idiot unless truly deserved. Like when someone is a troll, or say something offensive or stupid, and not things that are just stupid to me, but stupid in general.

Anyhow notice how you made a topic about gaijin, to stay how stupid that person was for having the noob attitude he had, about the use of the word?

btw what kind of attitude are you interested in? You say like you want to be away from all the ingnorant English teachers who do not understand Japan. Okay.
I'm just confused who is this chilax gaijin internet buddy/community you seem to be on the hunt for?

Those aren't in the TOU. I understand you feel preasured to conform to them, I don'T.
I don't feel pressured to conform to them, do you have a comprehension problem? I was stating for your benefit that is how most forums work, you are just ignorant of them, which obviously needs pointing out to you.

So you're saying that you adults with all the will power you have can't avoid topics they are sick of? Impressive.
So you are saying you can expect everyone to follow "your" way of thinking. People will inevitably write what that feel, case in point, your topic, do I have to be any clearer for you? The word delusional comes to mind.
Congrats, you are a power searcher
Thanks, I spend my all my weekends and spare time praticing. I actually want to be a Google Autocompleter.

I don't take you seriously at all, of course I'm not worried about strangers taking me seriously on the net.
Well, what is the problem then. Why are you getting your panties in a knot for? You do realise they hand out free tissues at train stations, if you like I could send you a couple of packs?
I work in film and TV.
Yeah, what exactly does that entail? You were pretty quick to whip those 20 years in Japan out, but now you are being humble? Something does not seem right, I sure would love to hear what your job description is?

I actually though people were a bit harsh in that thread which is why I welcomed you, I thought you may have some good input for this forum which is why the first post I made in this was intended to maybe help you feel that not everyone was too concerned with your other thread. Keep up the attitude, it seems to fit you well.

I don't feel pressured to conform to them, do you have a comprehension problem? I was stating for your benefit that is how most forums work, you are just ignorant of them, which obviously needs pointing out to you.

No man, I understand that you think that's the way things are and you have conformed to them to the point of "teaching noobs the rules" That's your hang-up, not mine.

So you are saying you can expect everyone to follow "your" way of thinking.

No, that's not what I'm saying.

Well, what is the problem then. Why are you getting your panties in a knot for? You do realise they hand out free tissues at train stations, if you like I could send you a couple of packs?

Grow up

Yeah, what exactly does that entail? You were pretty quick to whip those 20 years in Japan, but now you are being humble? Something does not seem right, I sure would love to hear what your job description is?

First off, Mike said "Your not FOB" so I answered "over 20 years," is that really too hard for you to follow? really?

My job description depends on what job I'm hired to do, it can be director, editor, camera-man, producer. I get a lot of jobs working on oversea shoots. Sometimes I'll work as an A.D. (goofer) for friends depending on what their budgets are, everybody tends to call on friends to help out when budgets are tight. Is that enough detail for ya? I mean come on man, use your imgination, I'm pretty sure you have an idea of what film and TV means.

No man, I understand that you think that's the way things are and you have conformed to them to the point of "teaching noobs the rules" That's your hang-up, not mine.
No, on the contrary, it seems to be yours. If you can't accept the way the world works it is not my problem. However I do have a grasp on reality , which you seem to have a hard time doing. Anyone with low post counts will be considered a noob, whether they are told or not. And just so you don't misunderstand me for the unpteenth time, I didn't decide this nor do I follow this. It is so widely recognised that there is even a wiki page on it. Here it is for your benefit. Newbie - Wikipedia
Newbie - Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No, that's not what I'm saying.
What are you saying then?
I am finding it hard to take that seriously from you, considering you are the one who needs to take a time out and really look at the way you are acting.
First off, Mike said "Your not FOB" so I answered "over 20 years," is that really too hard for you to follow? really?
Hmm... He said you were not F.O.B so you had to tell him you have been here 20 years? Interesting. And the question was, "You give the appearance of not being F.O.B. How is it you didn't long ago get tired of the "gaijin" vs. "gaikokujin" thing as a topic of discussion?" Why didn't you just answer the question, are you not sick of that topic? ほんまに二十年こちで生活しての?

Gentlemen, if I may here: I kind of get the funny, funny feeling that nothing fresh will become of this thread after all--in at least one sense of the meaning that we might conceive of the state of being fresh (as in new). All the while not wishing to disturb the exercise of free speech, and not meaning to condemn in any way, I did notice that one thread had been closed due a very similar tangent that I see in the pedulum here, and suggest that it might be best to let the original effort of the OP stand as it is explicitly expressed, and let all else fall by the wayside.

There should really be nothing left to be said but what might more specifically, and exactly, falll under the precisely intended purpose outlined in the OP. All other tangent statements, claims, assertions, charges, and, or, remarks, would best be left to ourselves; please.

And the question was, "You give the appearance of not being F.O.B. How is it you didn't long ago get tired of the "gaijin" vs. "gaikokujin" thing as a topic of discussion?" Why didn't you just answer the question

What you fail to see, and it's usually the case with people like you and Mike, is that I was not the topic. A-holes like you go into threads and instead of talking about the topic start attacking the thread starter. A-holes in other words. Get it? Going to fast for you? Hard to keep up is it?

あまりわからん。もっと詳しことを教えてくれ。どんなテレビや映画を監督として務めた?どこの会社でカメラマン・監督などで仕事をしてた?想像だけはちょっとできへんなぁ。。。

Seriously guy, this is not an interview. I'm not about to tell you what tv shows I've worked on or which companies have hired me. I think it's cute that you even think you are in a position to demand the kind of answers you're asking. You act like a punk to be honest but do what you know right?

Notice how I don't ask you **** about your life? Yes that's right....I'm not interested in you. Get it? Move along now.

There comes a point where you will be expected to have calmed down enough to refrain from gratuitous profanity and ad hominem attacks.

Mike I would have expected more from people like you, but I've read through your posts man, you got this attitude and sense of entitlement here that I don't get or care for. I seriously suggest you ignore me because I have already written you and freddy there off. Run along.

What you fail to see, and it's usually the case with people like you and Mike, is that I was not the topic. A-holes like you go into threads and instead of talking about the topic start attacking the thread starter. A-holes in other words. Get it? Going to fast for you? Hard to keep up is it?
Please point out when I attacked you? I haven't failed to see anything, you however have. You can't seem to grasp the fact that people will post what they feel. All you had to do was say "sorry , and that you did not realize that it had been discussed so much" . That would have been the end of it. But you showed attitude and contempt from the onset and that will only bring about the same kind of replies. Stop crying foul, b/c it takes two to tango. You seem hell bent on not acknowledging that you have an attitude and that it is all the other persons fault. You have some serious issues me thinks.

Yeah, what do I know. But I am curious as to what you did work on over here, b/c most producers or camera people don't have a problem telling what work they have been involved on. Maybe it is something I have seen and I would like to think I talked to the person who created it. And Especially being in the TV business, I would have thought you would not have a problem with that. You could even call it free advertising. I assume you are a freelancer correct? Or are you employed by a Japanese company full time?

Notice how I don't ask you **** about your life? Yes that's right....I'm not interested in you. Get it? Move along now.
No I didn't , but note taken. That being said, how is it you know what type of people Mike and I are if you haven't asked about our life? And that is your prerogative BTW, not asking about peoples lives, just as it is of others to tell you that you were beating a dead horse with your topic.

All you had to do was say "sorry , and that you did not realize that it had been discussed so much" . That would have been the end of it. But you showed attitude and contempt from the onset and that will only bring about the same kind of replies.

Really? That's how you really see it? Well don't wait for an apology is all I can tell ya. Guy you are the one who said that people need to pay their dues first. We're on different wave lengths.

But I am curious as to what you did work on over here, b/c most producers or camera people don't have a problem telling what work they have been involved on. So what you're telling me here is that you have a lot of assumptions. You're a weird one.

That being said, how is it you know what type of people Mike and I are if you haven't asked about our life?

I go by the things that I saw posted, the attitude I saw. I'm not interested in people like that. But again, you're not asking about general things are you, you're asking what company has hired me or what projects I've worked on. That's private information that I don't feel like sharing with the world. Is it really that hard a concept for you? Really?

Really? That's how you really see it? Well don't wait for an apology is all I can tell ya.
Don't worry yourself I wasn't.
Guy you are the one who said that people need to pay their dues first. We're on different wave lengths.
Mr Director, I am not sure what you mean here, but my point is still the same , you have to earn respect, which is other words is paying your dues, so yes an apology would have solved the whole situation. If YOU can't figure that out I really fail to see how you have got thus far in life. Logic is not one of your strong points is it?

So what you're telling me here is that you have a lot of assumptions. You're a weird one.
Really, I though it was common business sense. How real producers secure finance for their films usually relies on what work they have done in the past, getting that information out in the public eye is pretty much a given. On the other hand I could see if you did not want your fans to know you were posting here so under the name Rube , That I could understand. Here a good web page that is an interesting read, it is all about getting your product known , am I missing something?

Not a hard concept at all, but you seem fine with stating where live , you are in the film industry, you live in an affluent area of town. Should not be too hard to narrow down a gaijin who is a producer in Tokyo, considering their may only be a handful. I would have thought if you were intent on keeping your identity anonymous you would not even have shared that much info? Or is it that you want to come off as a big shot?

Mr Director, I am not sure what you mean here, but my point is still the same , you have to earn respect, which is other words is paying your dues

You're nuts.

If YOU can't figure that out I really fail to see how you have got thus far in life.

And yet here I am, a successful happy middle aged man. Yes you fail to see.

You're working under the assumption that I need work. But I notice you like to slip in little insults in just about all of your posts and that's why I laugh at Mike talking about people avoiding cussing. It's a total lack of honesty in communication that can only be found on the net.

There you go making assumptions again. You're very good at it.

You're nuts.
And yet here I am, a successful happy middle aged man. Yes you fail to see.
Not afraid of saying that are you and yeah , I fail to see. I do see a wanna be , trying to impress everyone with words like affluent, successful ect. You keep saying , so prove it to us once and for all, how expensive is your car(s) , how big is your house? Surely saying those things is not an invasion of privacy?
You're working under the assumption that I need work.
So you don't need work? You must be a celeb?
But I notice you like to slip in little insults in just about all of your posts and that's why I laugh at Mike talking about people avoiding cussing. It's a total lack of honesty in communication that can only be found on the net.
