9.0 Earthquake/Tsunami/Fukushima

The plant is in Omaezaki and it is quite a ways away from the epicenter that was in Fujinomiya. I was in the shower when it hit.. terrible timing.. there was not much shaking in Shiz city though. I hope this is not the precursor to something bigger.. sleeping with shoes by my bed just in case though.

No pots and pans falling here in Tokyo. When I saw the epicenter, I thought Mt. Fuji is going to erupt... :p
(Could be, since the epicenter is close to the mountain!)

I have to say that with all the reports of a lot of that energy being transfered to other plates I am quite a bit concerned down here in Osaka. (For those who don't know,we are supposed to be getting a big earthquake here in the next 30 years). Also Tokyo is a concern too.

We are currently updating our natural disaster strategies.:frown: Everyone is just in shock as how devastating this is. Our staff and company has already got a good bit of money to donate to the aid the relief, I (we) just hope there are no more casualties.

Japan tsunami 'could be 1,000-year event'

Tsunamis on the scale that hit north-east Japan last week may strike the region about once every 1,000 years, a leading seismologist has said.

Dr Roger Musson said there were similarities between the last week's event and another giant wave that hit the Sendai coast in 869AD.

It is not unusual for undersea earthquakes to generate tsunamis in this part of Japan. Offshore quakes in the 19th and 20th centuries also caused large walls of water to hit this area of coastline.

But previous research by a Japanese team shows that in the 869 "Jogan" disaster, tsunami waters moved some 4km inland, causing widespread flooding.

The researchers said that such gigantic tsunamis occur in the area roughly once every 1,000 years. Dr Musson, who is the head of seismic hazard at the British Geological Survey (BGS), suggested the latest tsunami was comparable to the event in 869.

You know despite all the destruction I am quite impressed by the number of houses despite being hit by a 9.0 quake and being swept away by a tsunami still stay relatively intact. My apartment is fairly new, so I feel safer this way that my main concern will be to run to higher ground rather than how will i escape my collapsed apartment. which is what i really always feared before this quake.

Anyone else have "glued" feet ?

While stationed on Adak Island in the Alutians , we had small quakes about once every three to four weeks and stronger quakes about every 3 months. In my head I would have "escape" plans for each area I could be in. Most of the time , when the quake would start , I was like the deer in the headlights. My feet felt like they were superglued to the floor and I just could not make myself move. I guess the term "frozen with fear" described the feeling . For the people in Japan , dealing with all those aftershocks and the possibility of another big quake it has to be very nervewracking.

Uncler Frank

:(

It's amazing, but you appear to get used to the tremors, developping a sort of sixth sense in regard to magnitude and potential danger (at least that's how I feel). Now we have to familiarise ourselves with new units such as CPM , micro- and millisievert or mrem.

Some more minor updates from the BBC Earthquake Live;

1120: Sato Takero from Sendai has given his reaction to the Japanese emperor's address: "I was born after World War Two," he says. "This is the first time for me to see him on TV or through the internet. It's something beyond imagination. If you understand the culture of the Japanese it is very, very rare for him to come out."

1117: Some 430,000 people displaced by the natural disaster are staying in more than 2,400 shelters, according to Kyodo. It reports that prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima are seeking to build 32,800 temporary housing units.

1113: Japan's main news agency, Kyodo, says the current death toll from Friday's earthquake and tsunami will inevitably climb higher as the recovery of bodies mainly in the tsunami-hit coastal areas "starts in full swing".

1053: Reuters reports that while the emperor has given occasional pre-recorded news conferences on set occasions such as his birthday and before overseas trips, the suddenness of the message, its simultaneous airing on nationwide TV and its content were unprecedented. After the earthquake in Kobe in 1995, which killed more than 6,400 people, \rEmperor Akihito issued a written statement, AFP says

1049: Referring to Emperor Akihito's broadcast address earlier, Japan's NHK TV commentary says that this is the first time the emperor has used a video message to convey his feelings to the Japanese people.

I think this would be an inappropriate time to hold this sort of celebration in Japan right now. Even if you went over there, i don't think the astmosphere would be very cheerful. But you & your partner should see your son, so i would still go over there but on this basis instead.
Edit: Then again, this is just my opinion.
