It's good to hear that they reply fast! Thanks for sharing this information. I read somewhere that a pillow and sheets are provided free of charge by the university. What a relief! It's a bit early, but I guess I'll mail them too. Congratulations!!!

hey there!

ahhh finally the whole waiting has got an end. just recieved an email from the embassy saying that i am officially accepted. i am going to todai.

the only weird thing is that i dont know any japanese and did not take the japanese exam because of that and now they wrote that i will not need to take the 6 months language course and will start directly with my phd studies?!

i dont get that... but anyway, i am super happy to finaly be 100% sure that i will be going there.

anyone else going to todai (school of engineering)?

@ijulia: I'm going to kyoto , also school of engineering. Good luck with the language studies, you do know that you will have to do your phd in japanese? the final report and project documents(if it is a project phd) will have to be in japanese even if you communicate with your professor in english.


*edit*: wait sorry I misread your post, maybe you are lucky and can do your studies in english instead of japanese

@Volla: officially one can do everything in english there. but my supervisor wrote me (ages ago) that the lanugage for meetings in his lab is mainly japanese and that it would be much more fruitful to know japanese for my research there. and i was sure i will get the 6 month language training and wrote him about it. and now i won't get it. i mean i will take japanese classes at the uni there but those are like once or twice a week... hm. should i write him again? hope he won't send me back home after realising that i don't understand anything.

I'll be going to Todai too but I'll be going to the school of frontier science. Did the university send you any documents regarding date of entry, housing etc.? I have not received anything so far >_< Am also unsure if I would have to attend any Japanese classes.

I don't think that life will be stressful there
Over here, I'm working 10 hours a day, 6 days a week and in my free time I'm doing AI research

Over there, the first full year will be for studying Japanese language and doing some research, then next two years for MSc
I think that I'll have a lot of free time over there

yes, you're probably right! i was working almost 16 hours a day for 6 days a week here too, so from that point of view i don't thiink the schedule there will get THAT crazy. but i guess we'll find out when we get there and it will probably be a different experience for each of us. anyway i can't wait to start my researc period there! for all of us still waiting for embassy results, ganbarimashouuuuuu!

Hey! Cool! Which campus are you at? Hongo?

Uhm, actually I did get an email from the foreign students office of the department I will be at asking me if i'd like to stay in the dorm and some information regarding the japanese language classes offered by them. They couldn't tell me which dorm i will be placed in and when everything starts - this information should come by the end of march (guess i will have to read it at the airport right before boarding the plane...

Let me know which dorm you are staying at- I really hope to be at the Komaba lodge as its superclose to shibuya

That I don't need the 6 months language course came from the lady of the japanese embassy. But I only got a short email saying the rest will come by post next week!

I really hope the PhD program is not too intense and time consuming as I am used to have loads of free time to do sports and go out and see friends and so on...

@ijulia: Hellos! I also got the emails about the dorms =) But otherwise, I didn't get much more info. I am not sure which campus I'll be allocated to but I hope it would be the Kashiwa lodge as I'll be at the kashiwa campus >_<

I have no idea how busy the program would be but I do expect that we'll have to stay in lab quite a lot =x But hope there'll be time to do other stuff too!

For those who are still waiting for the pledge and for the confirmation of the 2nd screening results, do hang in there! Hope you guys would get the desired outcome soon!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I actually finding this forum helpful and at the same time has driven me crazy of knowing that some people were rejected in the second screening.

I'm from East Timor and the only candidate from my country that passes the primary screening; I was accepted in Kyoto University which is my first choice University and completed all the document for the second screening.

So here is the thing, I have my student's visa ready (issued by the Japanese Embassy) and also my accommodation was confirmed (Misasagi International House) by Kyoto University Administration; but until today I have yet received any information about me being accepted in the secondary screening by neither the Embassy nor the University.

I went to ask the Embassy Yesterday if they have any information regarding the Scholarship but they said "No".

Does any have any idea of what is going on? or even faced the same problem.

Guess I have to wait.

Well, I signed the pledge yesterday.

I went to the Embassy to seek for the information which they said "No Information yet", then they handed me the Pledge and a Student visa form to fill.

So i got my visa today.
