hello,
Japanese universities follow different pattern for GPA. If your university do not give GPA but grades then you can use the following formula for calculating your GPA by grades (A,B,C..)
Grade Points Judgment GPツ(Grade Pointツ)
A 80ツ〜100 Pass 4.0
B 65ツ〜79 3.0
C 50ツ〜64 2.0
D 35ツ〜49 Nom-pass 0
F Below 34
Drop 0
The calculation formula shall be as follows:
GPAツ?? 4.0ツ×Aツ+3.0ツ×Bツ+2.0ツ×C/D
A: The number of credits earned for courses assessed as "A"
B: The number of credits earned for courses assessed as "B"
C: The number of credits earned for courses assessed as "C"
D: Total possible credits for courses officially taken, INCLUDING those for courses assessed as non-pass..
I got this from one of the Japanese universities and this is general the system followed by most of the universities , I hope this will help , PM me if u need more help

Hello everyone! I'm applying to University of Tokyo and Tokyo Tech for the MEXT scholarship via recommendation (outside of the embassy). University of Tokyo's application is due at the end of the month and I was checking if anyone else is going through this process as well! I already submitted my research proposal for Tokyo Tech and am waiting to hear back if they'll recommend me for a scholarship. Cheers!
Hello,
here are the answers to your questions
1) Yes for a japanese university grades are very important for international student , because they are selected on the basis of grades .. on the other hand the japanese students have to give an entrance test which is not required for international student..
GPA- Grade Point Average - Depends on university to university , for some a student who scores the max marks in the exam gets a full GPA and the GPA of other students are calculated on the basis of his score .. (Ex- Topper scores 90% marks in exam - his GPA 4/4 , Another student scores 85% marks - his GPA - (85/90)x4 = 3.77) , For other universities its on grades decided by the professors .. so you need to ask your university office what method they follow ..
2) Many students apply for University Recommendation = approx hundreds for like 5 seats ..
3) There is no priority for any country , any country having diplomatic relations with japan are welcomed... But they make sure that not more students from the same country are selected , like in case , there are many chinese students applying , so not every one gets selected , other countries student are equally given chance , their main aim is to internationalize the study environment by enrolling students from different countries.
( I got the MEXT scholarship this year by University Recommendation , so I have researched a lot before, thats why i could answer these answers , these are my opinions .. It can be wrong..)

I assume that your chances depend of your qualifications (of course) and how good your Japanese University is.
One university boasts of 100% rate of success when recommending students to MEXT the last 25 years. I believe them now.
I suppose that is Todai?
From the e-mail conversation with my prospective supervisor, I have the feeling that prospective supervisor has a very high influence on the scholarship....
Dear Pink CR,
I have a same situation like you.
However, I also do not know about my chance.
Please inform me if you found hopeful news.
good luck!
hey! i just had an interview with my potential professor and I guess now just waiting to see if i get the scholarship.... perhaps this information doesn't come out until the end of march or april? either way, it's a long time to wait!
