We've had several threads discussing our religious views (or lack thereof!), but I don't think we've had any specifically to discuss our political views. I thought it might be interesting to share them in a bit of detail - beyond the level of which party you vote for.

If you want to vote in the poll, take the quiz at Political Compass and choose your result, but please elaborate in the thread as well.

Although my parents took me to chapel every Sunday, politics was even more important in our house. Both my parents were very active in the Labour Party and other left-wing organisations. They both served terms as local councillors, and my dad was branch secretary for his engineering union.

During the Miners' Strike of 1984/85 I took part in demonstrations and fundraising events. Although I was very young, I believe I understood what we were campaigning for as well as a child of that age could. With this upbringing, it's not surprising that I inherited very left-wing opinions. However, as I did with my religious upbringing, I subjected these views to scrutiny, but with very different consequences. Whereas I rejected my religious upbringing, my belief in the political values instilled in me by my parents is stronger than ever.

I believe in two things: freedom and equality. I believe that it's one of the duties of the state to protect the freedoms of its citizens. People to should be allowed to think and say whatever they wish, and their freedom to act should be limited only when it endangers the safety of others.

However, I feel strongly that equality is a more desirable goal for our society than unbridled freedom. I believe that it's right to curtail people's freedoms in some limited respects in order to achieve a greater measure of equality. For example, I believe in progressive taxation and workers' rights, which could be construed as limiting the freedoms of the rich in order to benefit the poor.

By equality I don't mean that everyone should be the same. People should have the freedom to strive for a better life, to achieve whatever status they desire and to surround themselves with material possessions if they so wish. But I do believe that it's offensive for people to be rich in a society in which children are going hungry or living in overcrowded accommodation. I think that everyone should have the opportunity to work to support their family.

I don't believe in maintaining the status quo, but in closing the gap between rich and poor by redistributing wealth through taxation, education and welfare. I believe that a person's ability to succeed in life is limited by much more than just their own actions, and that it's the responsibility of the state to take care of those who are disadvantaged. I believe that a more equal society is better not just for the poor but for everyone.

What do you believe should be the goals of the society in which you live, and how did you come by those values?

I take a lot of heat/flak for my views.

My ideas and feelings about politics were formed during the Vietnam war and my years in the Navy.I felt back then , that politics was a dirty field where an honest person could not succeed at anything good or stay in office. I pledged never to vote or have anything to do with politics around 1970. After 40 years , I am finally wondering if I should change my views and get involved , and maybe even register to vote? My disgust for todays politics will probaly keep me on the sidelines till the day I die though ?

I can care less about politics. I don't care about it. I care about my country, but not about politics.

I've never liked the political compass test; its questions are misleading at times and my position unsatisfying. My positions are somewhat scattered and I'd find it difficult to characterize myself by the answer they give.

So no aspect of domestic politics affects your country's domestic or foreign situation?

Why are politics so poloraiiiiiizededed? :( I still think all politically related questions should have two boxes. "Let me think about it." and "I don't care because it doesn't effect me."

I just picked left wing liber-something-rather. While I try to avoid categorization of opinions and focus on the logical arguments for each issue, that is what I'm often categorized as by other when my religious friends aren't telling me that I'm the incarnation of Satan or possessed by demons.

As I said in the OP, this thread is not about categorising yourself, but to discuss our views in detail; the poll is just there in case anyone wants to post an overview. Surely other people have strong opinions about how society should be organised, even if you don't use the word "politics" to describe those opinions.

What are your opinions about how we should be taxed, about what services the government should provide, about what freedoms citizens should have?

I care about policy because i want to live a good life and i want to have my rights as a human being.
As result for carlessness the minority will rule the mijority (like in the ME).
policy is a part of our future so i think everyone should has his own word and opinion to say, when i vote,i vote for my future and my path in this life.

I believe that the government is exists for helping people, organizing their daily life, making better socity..etc.
But unfortunatly because of the corrupt governers and political mistakes these days most people care less about policy.

I was wondering for along time "What if we don't have a government ? can we live better life ?"

The 9/11 events proved beyond question that government cannot protect us. Thousands of crime victims each year prove the same. If it's part of the social contract that individuals submit to government authority in exchange for government's protection, then governments all over the world have breached that contract.

So the people and the individual should reserve enough rights for themselves that 1) they can protect and defend themselves, and 2) overthrow a government that's become too oppressive or incompetent.

That much probably lands me in the libertarian camp.

Damn Hezam, you're on form these last couple of days. This statement is the best thing I've read on this thread.

Lol,it's like " I don't care about my mind i care about my body "
You can't have a healthy body if you don't know what's good and what's bad for your body.
Do you know that "country" is reffering to policy too ?

Is this stuff trendy or something? I mean, what determines the state of wealth and well-being of a country? I'm sure this was stated before me, but some people still struggle with establishing a connection.
