I think what you have in mind is 「物」meaning things, which is a common noun.So then, 高山のような町は忙しいものです。means "Generally speaking, towns like Takayama are busy."
However in my mind the 忙しいもの could just be "busy things"...so towns like Takayama are busy things...er..
The もの being discussed here is what is called 形式名詞 (formal noun) which does not translate directly into English but is expressed in other forms such as:
Generally speaking, ~ should be ~
Because they are different language elements, the kanji 物 is not used in this usage.
