Konichiwa!

I was wondering for those of you living in Japan, could you tell me what Japanese foods are Halal ( or ok for Muslims to eat) ? I would like to try new foods and Japanese food look interesting but I am not sure of what foods I would be allowed to eat (according to my religion), but I am not familiar with Japanese foods; so for those of us who are familiar with Japanese foods and are familiar with Halal foods, can you please provide a name of a food or a list of foods you think are Halal and good to eat. I appreciate it.

If I can edit this post, maybe I will copy what ever suggestions you make and create a list for other people who may stumble upon this thread.

Could you lay out the basics of halal's restrictions for those of us who are too lazy to google them?

generally, halal meat is hard to find in Japan, but it does exist. If there are no restrictions regarding vegetables then there are plenty of veggie dishes. If seafood is ok... you're better off making a list of the foods to avoid instead...

The term 'halal' refers to the way the animal has been killed, so Lamb, Chicken and beef are permitted halal foods. (Pork is forbidden to Muslims ). Dairy/Eggs/Seafood are fine

I would imagine finding Halal food in Japan would be hard, and it may be easier to stick to fish and vegetable based dishes. I havent been to Japan yet, but would imagine plenty of fish type dishes..if you like fish.

if you're just interested in trying japanese food in your home country..then you can try googling Japanese recipes

Well there is an Asian food store near me and I wanted to try some of them out but they (the labels, instructions and ingredients) are all in foreign languages and I don't want to buy something that would be forbidden to eat. So I thought if there are people in Japan who know what foods are good to eat they could recommend foods we can eat and that they really liked. This way, if I know what to ask for at that Asian food market, I would ask one of the employees to help me find the ingredients and all. Besides that I thought it would be interesting to make a list of Japanese Halal foods for reference for other Muslims..

I'm also working on a website called 'Islam in Japan' and I was thinking if enough people posted in this topic to make a good list I could put that on that website...

For the most part if the animal is a clean animal or a non-carnivorous animal we can eat it. For example Muslims can't eat catfish because it eats the junk off the bottom of the water they may be in. And we would not be able to eat Shark either because it is carnivorous. Also, we can eat fish that have scales, but we can't eat fish without scales like shark.

you're probably right about that, but we still can't eat fish without scales such as shark. I guess I confused it with being carnivorous since sharks are. Sorry about the confusion

Since it's hard to find halal meat, you're safest just sticking to a pesco-ovo-vegetarian diet (fish and eggs).

肉 - meat
豚、豚肉 - pork, pork meat (if you just avoid this you'll probably be fine)
牛肉 - beef
牛乳 - cow's milk
鶏 - chicken
魚 - fish
玉子 - eggs

It's not guaranteed that you'll see these characters when the dish contains them. Often a menu will categorize the food based on the main protein, so there might be a header that say 牛、 豚、鶏 etc. Your best bet is to have a Japanese friend (or at least someone who is familiar with Japanese cuisine) with you to let you know what's in the dishes you want to try. Or learn enough Japanese to ask for yourself.
