MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2010: General Discussions.

I received a letter from the embassy today saying that I have been provisionally accepted for this scholarship. However my placement univ selection, visa and air ticket will be given only in the month of feb or march. A nice Christmas gift for me! and yeah merry Christmas to you all and seasons greetings :)

Today, December 24th, I received the call from the embassy!!! I'm in!!! I got the scholarship!!! Mein Gott in Himmel!!! I just got the call!! my hands are still shaking!!! I'm so happy!! They told me they would be calling me again on jan 15th!! I didn't quite understand what for though :-S... I was too happy to pay attention :P, I think it will be to fill the forms for the visa and stuff like that. This is by far the best Christmas present EVER!!!!

Well I guess it's too late to call/e-mail my embassy now (Christmas Eve) and I'm not even sure if the department for the scholarship works between Christmas and New Year. I hope I don't have to wait until after new year though.

I too got the call from the embassy in Dominican Republic confirming my selection as a candidate! Here's to hoping we all get the call soon!! Happy Holidays!!!!

Indeed Nyfa, I applied for Toudai. But now that you mention it... when the person in charge of the cultural affairs in the embassy told me that I got the scholarship I immediately asked to which University I was going to. She told me, "the university you chose as first choice", which was Toudai. I find it somewhat odd that she said that in those words, I mean, "Todai" is easier to say than "The university you chose as first choice" but I was too happy to care about that matter in that moment :D and another thing... I'm no psychic, but I got the impression that the University selection is still "tentative", what I mean is... the intonation and the way she said it to me sounded like I would "tentatively" go to "the university I chose as first choice" but that was not absolute...

I think I'll have to wait until jan 15th to know the exact details... :?

Hm, maybe just like Ajay said above, that the placement result, air ticket, yada yada yada will only be announced later (in your case, Jan 15).

But hey, at least your embassy had called, and that's definitely OFFICIAL man :D. Congrats! Have a nice new year! :D
 
Honestly, when the embassy called me the said "I have good news for you. Your scholarship has been approved and now whats left is the university selection from the government."

At this point I assumed the government was going to pick another university for me (worst case scenario) but then I asked about my first choice and they said... "its probably going to be your first choice but you'll find out about that in the near future." They mentioned february as a tentative date for the final response regarding my university choice but given my email from my prof. from osaka university i'm quite sure it will be Osaka University.

Sooo... I guess in the end the only official part is that we got the scholarship. University placement however is still tentative... at least in the embassy's eyes. I'm going to call tomorrow or the day after and ask about it. The embassy is about 5 mins driving distance so I may as well stop by and ask in person. We'll see. Good luck to everybody again and please keep us posted!!

Oohh, now that I think about it.. I remember in the past few years, my embassy only call everyone once, and that's it, you got all the info : scholarship, university placement, air ticket, yada yada yada.

Hm, maybe now I won't put my hopes up for any news on January, haha. Probably February, like what the admin lady said, cause it's the official one from MEXT.
 
I guess that some of the embassies choose to tell the news in two steps:
-people who got accepted
-specifics to where they are going and so on

Some Embassies, for example Indonesia, only give an all in one announcement. January 10th or around that date, someone said, right?

My embassy said: January/February from the beginning, so it would be slightly rude to contact them before the New Year. However, the more people here already now, the more I'll start to feel anxious! I'm happy at least the Indonesians will have to wait too! Do you guys think I should/could e-mail my embassy? :?
 
Well, the embassy has always given me the impression that I can call and ask them about anything. Like, for example, I was abroad in the United States for the past 2 months and I called them a few times just to check on things and they were always glad to hear from me even though they had no news for me.

To be honest, the people witholding the news is not the embassy but the actual japanese government (MEXT) so unless you call like every 3 hours to check the status of the application, if you are friendly enough about asking, i'm sure they won't mind.

Haha..We are anxious too..but since none of my fellow country mate (as far as I know) have been called by the embassy, it makes me a little calmer

But as Neo already pointed out, it depend on you and maybe your embassy

Anyway I, personally, think I can wait for a couple of days, assuming the announcement will be in January 10 or perhaps another 1 or 2 month if the actual announcement comes in February. My initial plan right now in my mind is I will call them on January.

I was chosen as an alternate candidate back in July and heard nothing more of it until Christmas Eve. I just checked my email today and I received an email from the consulate.

Dear Ms. (uranussama)

Thank you very much for applying 2010 scholarship by Japanese government.
In this mail, we would like to announce you the result of scholarship in Japan.
We officially received the result this morning through the ministry of foreign affairs.

According to that, you passed a final selection by Japanese ministry of education.
We are very happy to hear such a nice result of you.

By February, the ministry of education will be making an arrangement with the university that can accept you.
After the ministry of education gets a final approval from the university, you could have rights to go to Japan from April.

Please let us explain detail to you later.
My assistant will call you after Jan. 4.

Have a happy Christmas!


This sounds good obviously but now I'm wondering if that's just a confirmation of me as an alternate candidate... the person who sent me this email isnt the person who usually deals with the scholarships, that person is on vacation. So at first I was really excited but now I'm kind of worried that I took it the wrong way... after all I was just an alternate. :?

Sounds to me like you're going, hun, status as an "alternate" notwithstanding. Congrats! ^_^
 
Does Mext provide scholarship for the student during Japanese Language Institute period, such as ABK, before going to postgraduate.

If you are an alternate and stay an alternate, they wouldn't contact you with anything, right?
This means that you became a real candidate and most likely will have passed through all the rest of the screenings. I would say congrats, even though for all of us, the same feeling remains: "Until you have these documents in your hands, there might still go something wrong, lol"
