MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2010: General Discussions.

I contacted someone who is in Japan with the scholarship now and he said that you can't choose the date for your flight. The plane tickets are being sent to you a couple of weeks before you leave and most people at his University arrived 4-6 April.

To be honest, I don't think we can be certain about anything. The system that is used by MEXT to distribute the students is probably not a single parameter system. Most likely these things will have their say:
-How many people from your country want to go to the same university?
-How many people this year applied for the same department at the same university?
-How many people applied to the university in total?
-How many people applied to the universities in the same prefecture/region in total?
-How many people didn't get a letter of acceptance?
-And many other reasons...

I was ref'd by mallika, and I read ...uh, most of the recent comments on this.
First of all, congrats who has pre-officially (or officially? I mean, the paper were from MEXT) selected.

And mallika, fret not, I'm going there for education too (the branch is music). EDUCATION FOR THE NEXT GENERATIONN, OH YES.

I guess, I'm one of the "I mailed at least 3 Unis, (this is optional=)just one of them replied the e-mail, but received the LOA from all of them". ...The thing is, the only person (or persons) I got in contact was kyoumuka. Yes, they've been great to me, especially Kunitachi of Tokyo, you know, replying all of my deeds and paranoid questions, but the only thing I got to see from my will-be prof is his cute name on the LOA.

Everyone has their precious Profs! I can't even email stud. affairs without thinking too much and/or asking too many questions. They (must!) have a limit on the MEXT knowlegde basis. ..Or not?

Maybe I should just ask for my Prof's e-mail? Would they shoo me? Or do they even have the right to shoo me for this kind of thing?

Ah yes..again I'm agree with you...I think trying to guess what MEXT do is kinda lost cause and also if I may add...I think the next most worrying thing in this process, after the case of our acceptance, is how much stipend we will be receive ? will it be reduced again ?

You hit the spot arap! ☝ Actually, that is my biggest concern, because I don't know anything about that and according to some posts in other threads, things are going to get somewhat nasty the next year. I applied to this scholarship because I don't have the money to study in Japan (don't even have for a one-way ticket!! ) I don't mind a cut in the stipend as long as I'm certain that I would be able to live with that. I'm in for three meals, a room where I can study and sleep, soap and water; the rest is just luxury . Just hope this budget cuts are only rumors or at least not so bad as I've heard.

Hai im also attending the MEXTinterview but mine is on 7th july..i have few enquiries that i hope someone could explain to me.. First of all im a degree and also a master holder in chemical engineering..my questions are as following
1. They asked to specify the field of specilization studied in the past..does tht mean i need to state my research area during my master's or just in general as in chemical engineering...
2.THis might sounds a simple question but im still somewhat confused overthis matter..For my case field of study, should i put it as Natural Science or be more specific Chemical Engineering? there is another part where i need to fill up the detailed field of study..so wht should i fill up for that
3.On the form for field of study and study program, in which they asked us to write the proposed study program..they have divided the parts into 2 section 1.present field of study and 2.your research theme after arrival in japan. What is the difference between both section..How do i fill up this part..
Really hope someone could help me..thanx alot
4.Additional question i was made to understood that its best that we enrol first as research student and take the entrance exam before enrolling as doctoral student as in my case..therefore the question number 14 term u wish to study in japan i should choose iii.from a research student through doctoral course completion..am i rite on this?

Hi, kellylen!! A fellow chemical engineer. May I know what research you're in and which university you plan to apply to? Who knows..maybe we can meet next year in Japan!!
Answers to your questions:
1) I only have a bachelor's degree so I listed down some of the subjects I studied and my final year research project. If i had a masters, I would have included my master's research topic as well.
In summary, I briefly explained what I did. I did not just put a general statement such as "chemical engineering".
2) Natural sciences: Chemical Engineering
3) I posted a reply to this in the thread "Field of Study and Study Program Guidelines" posted by ismori in this same jref forum. Do take a look and hopefully that will be helpful.

Also, TOEFL/TOEIC is compulsory for every student according to my Prof. Does anyone has an experience taking/taken TOEIC in Japan? Heard that it's easier as compared to TOEFL. I don't think I have enough time to prepare to sit for TOEFL in Malaysia anytime soon because if i am not mistaken, it has to be arranged 2 months in advance.

Start panicking. Not ready for everything, even the details on entrance examination. @_@

I've taken TOEIC before, well not in Japan, but in Korea, well.. my personal opinion, Yes it is easier than TOEFL, even without full preparation I still can score pretty well

This is new to me...you actually received the LoA, which means you passed the embassy selection and did get the recommendation and you actually thought yourself failed ?

Because our heads up here were mostly based on news from our Professor, while yours is more like you actually being contacted by the universities administration office

Because if I don't missed anything in this forum (at least for last year one), people who actually may fail after passing the embassy selection were the one who had status as substitute, that is why your case can be considered new to me

I can understand how you feel, but don't give up hope just yet. If your subject of study is something that can be studied at any University, you may still be placed into a University selected for you by MEXT. Even though we don't know, we can expect that any University in Kanto/Kansai or any imperial University has most likely been 'overbooked'.

Can I ask which of these two was your top choice?

For us who still waiting.. let's expect for the good news.. and prepare for the worst..

I think there are some possibilities:
(1) MEXT decides to place us at different Universities.
(2) for anyone receiving CoA instead of LoA, perhaps it will be processed later because it means that MEXT doesn't have to do any negotiation with the University? (you are already officially admitted by the graduate school)
(3) Changes in the internal of MEXT secondary screening. Perhaps there is reduction for scholarship recipients to meet the budget? No wonder the Embassy said that there's no guarantee that we will be granted the scholarship after passing the preliminary selection.

Sorry for making you confused. Yes, I got recommended by embassy in August.
I just contacted University Adminstration Office and got the answer from them. Actually, I also emailed my professor but got no reply. But I do believe MEXT contacts the U Administration Office first.

In application form, I did not fill in the "university preference". But when I submitted to the embassy the LOA from Rits and Certificate of Entrance Permission from GSID, Nagoya, I enclosed a letter indicating my first choice was Rits.

All I do now is waiting untill the announcement from embassy to confirm this.

Do check with your Professor/the uni admin if they alternatively accept IELTS scores. In my case, chose to take IELTS (this Sat!) instead of TOEFL because it was more convenient.

To be optimistic but not too much so that it won't become arrogance
To prepare for the worst but not too much so that it won't become negative thinking or pessimistic

Yeah, I think everyone can stand to calm down a bit. Constant panicking and freaking out isn't helping anyone at this point, and the rumors are getting out of control. Heck, more people seem upset now than they did when we were waiting to see if we passed the preliminary selection, and that was the hard part!!

Can we please remember that historically, EXTREMELY few people who made it this far got cut? Even students who didn't get LOA's got placed, and I'd say they had the most reason to be worried!

On the day of the exams, I got a chance to talk to one of the people who coordinates the scholarship at the consulate. She told me that each embassy is only allowed to recommend a limited number of students that MEXT decides ahead of time. MEXT only allows as many Embassy/University recommendations as they can handle in the first place, and that's taking into account the different tuitions that each recipient might face.

They prepared in advance for this. It's not like we're a surprise to them, because they knew exactly how many students would be coming. So, unless the new government decides to go crazy in the next two weeks, I'd say we're pretty safe and that they'll take care of us.

So I got the following email from Todai today in the morning... not exactly a confirmation mail but pretty much a positive sign. I think MEXT has started contacting Todai and other univs in Tokyo. Name is changed obviously .

Another news from Toudai I email-ed the admin lady of my graduate school, and she replied me with this.

Dear nyfa-san,

Information of MEXT in this time is confirmation of acceptance.I think final result of MEXT will come to us around February 2010. So we will forward final result to our professor in the February. Yes, your name on the list of people that MEXT had asked confirmation of acceptance from University of Tokyo. So, please wait for a while.

I am looking forward to meeting you in 2010!
