カメラを買う: simple statement, to buy a camera
カメラを買ってみる: to buy a camera (to see how good it is, how it works, etc.)

I guess it could also refer to feeling the receiver out as a trial against future purchases. So if tomii for some reason would seem unmoved by the gesture, no more maps for you ! It just seems interesting phrasing for such a small item.

The core of this sentence is "the world is" "war/battle/fight/struggle/conflict".
戦い is described as
ひとつの記憶とその反対側の記憶との（戦い） between a memory and another of opposite side
果てしない（戦い） endless

My attempt is
The world is an endless battle between a memory and another of opposite side.

Since I haven't read 1Q84, I do not know the context and what kind of wordings would fit best, so there are many possible translation for this sentence.

It is a term given to documents and recordings that are so important (in their historical significance, etc.) they should be preserved/archived and passed onto generations to come.

You see it used everywhere though... on such items as special edtition pop music CDs, magazines and DVDs.

Probably she's not a native Japanese. Just not good at writing.
(You can see か she wrote in the picture in his previous post. Plus, we don't usually say ばーかー, it should be ばーか.)

With this sentence, the person who was writing to Tomii thought that the map she/he found at a 100 yen shop might be interesting (for Tomii) just to see , so she bought it to see how Tomii would like/enjoy it.

Does it make sense?
