where can i get the elec dict?? is it sold in every japanese shooping mall? what kind of shop sell them?

i dont recommend changing your money there.. u lose alot to currency exchange,, they will first change your money to USD means u lose to USD exchange then only to yen 2nd time losing to exchange rate

electronic dictionaries are everywhere in japan, you will have no problem finding them...every electronic goods/computer store (sofmap, yamada, midori, k`s denki, seiden, big camera, yodobashi camera etc.) sells them, variety stores such as daiei, jusco etc. also stock a pretty good range...the first one I ever bought was from a newsagency in a shopping mall!

oh, and I had a quick look at prices of dictionaries in those stores, at the moment around 25-30 000 yen seems to be the price for a good advanced dictionary with 100+ dictionaries and kanji sensorpad...now there are only a couple of models for 50 000 yen, which was the standard price for the kind of dict. I bought few years ago!! so you guys will get a better deal than I did haha

regarding money exchange, if I'm going to use the ATM route, I'll probably use the ATMs at the airport, right after touchdown. I'm pretty sure they'll take international credit cards. The problem with exchanging money to yen over here is that most money-changers just don't deal with the yen -- it's mostly dollars and euros. I can exchange at my bank, but it requires ordering the required amount in advance, an atrocious exchange rate and a high commission fee. I'm pretty sure withdrawing at an ATM is cheaper.

I also have a few 10,000 yen bills left over from my trip to Japan a couple of years ago, so it's not like I'm going completely empty handed, cash wise.

Thanks for everyones advice about the DS dictionary. I did some more research on the DS vs e dictionaries, and its seems like E dictionaries are the way to go because or their multiple dictionaries and large word banks.

moving on, I found out about my flight plans. I will be heading to Narita first, then taking another flight to osaka itami, finally arriving at 8pm on april 2nd... I think I will need to spend the night somewhere.

Did anyone else get information regarding transport from the airport to the dorm from their faculty office? I just got an email informing me about a cheapish door-to-door transportation service, which Kyodai highly encourages all Monbusho scholars to use.

According to the email, upon arrival we should get to the MK Skygate Shuttle counter and declare we are Kyoto University exchange students. A van will take us directly to the dorms, so no need to wander through the Kyoto subway and bus system dragging heavy luggage. Cost is 3500 yen from KI to both Shugakuin and Ohbaku. We get to bring one large piece of luggage for free, and each additional one is 1000 yen. We don't have to pay on location for this service, and the fee is collected at a later date by the Foreign Student Division at Kyodai.

Sounds like a good deal to me!

I still didn't get the full travel itinerary from the embassy, but there are only two flights from Israel to Frankfurt every day. One gets to Frankfurt 8:30am, the other 20:00pm, so I am fairly certain it's the first one

A long time to wait for the transfer. Sigh.

consider yourself lucky.. i have to transport waiting for me.. need to carry my baggage all the way from airport and take JR to university station and drga my stuff up to meet my prof.. ☝

Seems am the only one that arrives later than everyone else! I got some slight flight info (no details about the flight number or time) but I will be leaving my country on the 2nd going to Dubai for Transit then arriving at Narita 's airport on the 3rd .... I dunno about the rest of my scholars, All i know is that none of the 4 of them is located in Tokyo .... and I have a feeling that I will be traveling all by myself throughout this whole trip ... (sigh ... *)

I think the gate for the Japan leg of the trip is the best bet for meeting up. We should make a list of who arrives at the airport when, and set meeting times based on that. From the gate, we can go on detours in search of food, shopping, or just aimlessly wandering around to avoid boredom.

you and me both. My total trip time is 20hr 20min with the flight transfer and waiting. My laptop battery only last about 8 hours... I guess I should bring some reading materials.

Am assuming my trip will take as long, even when my country is way closer . As I remember last time I went to Japan took us around that long to get there as we waited for like 9 hours for the flight transfer ...so ... Reading material it is!

I just wanted to cheer you up about long trips and late arrival date... I'll be leaving home at 7:00 am on the 1st of April but won´t get to Fukuoka until the 3rd at 10:00 pm... so it's three entire days of flying and waiting.....

Well whoever booked my flight was really mean. There are a bajillion flights a day from Kuwait to Dubai. And he/she booked this really early one giving me a 6-7 hour lay over. WHY

On a lighter note less than two weeks to go. Woohoo.
I feel like I should be brushing up on my japanese but I find myself procrastinating ALOT.

Oh and i keep reading on these lists of what to bring to japan that you should bring your own deodorant. Apparently the Japanese don't sweat or don't stink. Or both. So the deo in japan is really weak.

there's no need to bring that many things to read
there's a pretty impressive entertainment system on these planes
with international movies...meaning u can watch japanese movies on ur way to japan...some last minute brushing up
or u could listen to japanese music....
so trust me you won't be getting that much reading done...

Well whoever booked my flight was really mean.
So the deo in japan is really weak.

Maybe they were just trying to find the cheapest route. My consulate told me they booked me the cheapest route, so I have 3 flights when it can be 2 for some 100usd more.
About the deodorant, grrr, I have sweat(and probably stinking) problems... I will have to bring some more...

My plan is: stay up all night because I'm so excited, and then sleep in the plane most of the time to avoid all the wait boredom. I will also adjust myself to Japan time this way.

hmm...we m'sians should be super grateful that ours is considered short distance as compared to others,with direct flight plus the time is from night and reaching the next morning, just nice to sleep for 8hours
Only thing is lack of luggage allowance. (btw, ms yin said JAL hasn't replied to the embassy yet)
