The Nielsen Happiness Study found that globally, women are happier than men in 48 of the 51 countries surveyed in April 2008, and only in Brazil, South Africa and Vietnam were men found to be happier than women.

"Because they are happier with non-economic factors, women's happiness is more recession-proof which might explain why women around the world are happier in general than men are," Nielsen Vice President of Consumer Research Bruce Paul said in a statement.

Japanese women reported the greatest difference and are 15 percent happier than Japanese men. Women are also more optimistic about the future, scoring higher than men on predictions of their happiness in the next six months.

THis findings look quite different from what it is said ..... Japan is Man's Society or similar.

I personally believe that the Japanese women are living in provileged class, letting men/husband work until midnight, while they go shopping at Ginza street. 😌

I think you hit the nail on the head. < ....ducking flames from the other posters.....> I hope there is a survey for the women who are not married or who are married and working. I am not sure if the wives still control the purse strings in general while the husbands go through the daily grunge works.
I typically do not see Japanese and happiness in the same sentence. :p With a high suicide rate, I personally do not find the Japanese lifestyle fulfilling.

I agree.

I principle I agree with equal rights between men and women. Still it is hard to take a Japanese woman seriously who thinks that marrying a rich man or not even rich but a company man is the goal of life. So they can go shopping in Ginza with their husbands AMG Benz S55. Who has not really worked hard in her life. While being poor mothers since they are mothers only because that is part of the deal. One of the most revolting human beings I have ever met in my life was one of these women. Arrogant, bad manners.

Of course this is a generalization. Still this seems much more common in Japan. I do not understand it. They do not have any perpsective and do not understand how hard it is to make alot of money.

Japan is insanely materialistic, not just the women. However, I believe that the gender restrictions along with the push for materialism can lead to people who are like those you describe above to a certain percentage.

While I'm American, I can easily say that a woman who is only interested in shooting out babies and suffering exclusively in almost a victim roll, as well as the stereotypical gold digger materialistic ***** are two types of women I want nothing to do with. (I doubt many men do...)

So the survey finds a large gap between the apparent "happiness" of men and women, and assumed it meant that the women are happy? That's awfully optimistic, is it not more likely that the men are miserable?

Another broken ruler.

But have you seen the DECLINING birth rate in Japan? No shooting going on.

and suffering exclusively in almost a victim roll,
Are you really that naive as to believe that Japanese women are INTERESTED in that? Your words.

Oh no, I'm just picking two absurd extremes. My loose point was either extreme isn't going to be realistic in attracting another, or leading to any sense of "happiness."

I do not think it assumed women were happy. It observed that women were happier than men. Or we could say less miserable.

Still that was a good observation.

Only 15% happier than Japanese men? I would say that they are at least twice as happy and as you say, many Japanese women seem to live privileged (although not all of the) lives.

I am not sure if they still do it in Japan. This thread brought this into my mind. It used to be the old cliché in Japan that the guy tells his wife he would make her happy when they get hitched. There is something wrong here (as no one is responsible to make someone happy as it is his/her own responsibility).

It would be a good Litmus test to ask her if she wants to pursue her own career (I am talking from the guy's perspective). If she says no and would like to stay home, the guy should run away right on that spot (Run, like there is no tomorrow). Those women who suck out money from their men are like leaches, which do not understand the value of the money (as they have not earned it!).
