Just bought DVD Volume 2 of Visual kei DVD Magazine from the US-based Maru Music and am very impressed.
The DVD was less than $12 and had an hour of bands; footage and subtitled interviews/Q&A sessions. I bought it just for the Chariots section (which I saw on YouTube... though not subtitled like it is on this DVD). The Chariots section was great, excellent live-footage clips and interviews; better than what Japanese-based DVDs usually release.
I also enjoyed the Himeichigo section abd the SaTan stuff. Really cool... and subtitled!!!!!!
The DVD host - who popped up frequently between segments - is the singer of An Cafe and he is really quite adorable and supremely cute... unfortunately he looked like a real "dick" at times, especially when he actually (and obviously) was looking down and reading off cue cards. It was really bad during the short segment on the History of visual kei when he was explaining about X-Japan and Dynamite Tommy (COLOR). I mean. . . for someone to be in VK as a professional and to NOT KNOW this kind of basic information without having to read it... is really pathetic. And it was read so poorly as if it were the first time he'd ever heard this information. Boo!
Overall a great DVD regardless. The footage is great, the interviews fun (if a little childish in their questions) and the pace fast and enjoyable. I will definitely purchase others when they come out.
And to the producers of the DVD.... please don't make these DVDs look so girly and childish. Having the An Cafe vocalist partnered with a cute talking hand puppet (and later having a puppet show on the DVD!!! Ehghad!) is exactly what is wrong with visual kei promotion these days. I think we all want visual kei to grow around the world and to find a wider audience in terms of age and sex, so PLEASE stop treating VK as a music that is only for cute young girls who love to scream kawaiiiiii while jumping up and down on the spot!!
