my notebook... and the problems...

Okay my lovely Dell Inspiron 1150 (2 years old) isn't working anymore...(SHINDAAAA). Now I am trying to locate where the problem is, so that maybe I can do something about it... or can tell my wife about it so that I have they approval to use our money to buy a new one... (I'm married lol ).

Okay, here's the thing: When I start the computer up it will stop before opening the windows area and just keeps loading and loading just like this screenshot.

It loads for over 30minutes without anything happening, except for 1 time last week, when it actually did open windows but was sooooooo slow that I needed to restart it with the "off" button... and again came the long long endless loading screen.

Before i had a look at setup menu (press F2, when you start the computer), and there I saw that my battery was Idle...

I think it maybe is the battery problem... if it is so, than I should buy myself a new one (where in japan can you buy dell batteries? I don't have a credit card either....).

If I should just re-instal windows... well I don't have a windows cd...

So any advice?

To tell if it is a battery problem just plug in the AC adapter and yank the battery. But I kind of doubt that is the issue. Hit F8 right after the BIOS clears its checks and you will be presented with a windows startup menu, select the safe mode option (or VGA mode) and see if it boots and runs for you. If it doesn't go back into that menu and choose the debug mode option, it should at least show you what it is getting stuck on.

If you have more questions on it just let me know, or post what it is loading when it becomes un-responsive.

Um....

Be careful doing that or you could cause some major issues, like destroying your processor, memory, etc. I would have suggested using a can of compressed air as you want to avoid creating any static electricity. But if it works it works. Maybe its time to stop eating over the keyboard? lol

I'm also going to have to recommend you purchase compressed air from your local computer store. Vacuum's are not meant to clean such delicate hardware. Maybe it was just the computer overheating, and freezing as a result?

For buying Dell laptop batteries, go to the Dell website, I think there may be a store directory where you might be able to order replacement parts and have them shipped to, and then you could pay in-store.

If you cant get compressed air to clean out fans and such I often use a large painters brush. Not a wall paintbrush but a soft-bristled artists pain brush. It gets the dust out of the fans.

What you might be best on doing is downloading http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a= (that is a tool to check the temperature of your components and also checks the state of them too get the lite version its free and its all you need)

Also defrag your computer that will speed it up anyways the windows has a defrag tool in accessories/system tools. Even if that isn't the problem its good to do it anyways.

If you're still having problems ill actually mail you a CD, which will check all your hardware and test it completely.

I'm in the market for a new PC myself...my current one can not do DVD editing, and the wife wants a Japanese laptop. I hate laptops, and want a new desktop (american specs) any thoughts?

One thing about the Mac that I have bought, was that I could choose what language I wanted to have from the moment I started up the computer for the first time.

So I think Mac is a very good idea.
