How to say "Im trying to learn japanese"

I have yet to fully learn hiragana or katakana symbols, so I would like to know how to say "im learning japanese", or trying to learn, in romaji.

Would it go something like "Watashi wa benkyou nihongo"?

I would just like something to say to inform the person that I am new to the language.

"I'm study japanese", would be something like: watashi wa nihongo o benkyou shimasu. / わたしはにほんごをべんきょうします。

I don't know about try or trying, nor about learn/learning.

"nihongo wo naratte imasu" is polite expression.
If you want to say more easy, "Nihongo Benkyou chuu" or "Nihongo wo Benkyou chuu desu".

"XXX shite(or tte) imasu" means "XXX ing" in English.
"naratte imasu" or "Benkyou shite imasu" means "learning".

"Benkyou chuu" is more frank expression.

"nihongo wo naraou to shite imasu" is good. But I think "nihongo wo naratte mite imasu" is not good. "nihongo wo naratte mimasu" is better?

I would probably stick to "nihongo wo benkyou shite imasu," as it is probably the most natural way to say "I study/am studying Japanese."

I agree with nice gaijin.
"narau" implies one is taking lessons (not self-teaching).
"benyou suru" is more generic expression for learning.
~(shite) miru sounds doing something tentatively, just to try it out.
~ou to shiteiru is about to do it, has not started yet.
