Indeed, this was a time when most of Europe had its population living in misery and that's when the idea for the 'American Dream' comes, from these people escaping the misery, not slavery, they were living in Europe and coming to these 'Promised Land' in America.
So, any thoughts on the Black/Japanese couples sbject?
Mauricio
lol sorry i have to correct you here.
old skool peasents in Europe actually lived a pretty good life.
the average serf only worked 150 days per year.
this included the time spent working for the lord, to pay the rent.
Most of the work done for the lords was actually quite light and was no more than 1/2 a day to 1 day per week.
So yea, imagine having the run of a house to yourself, and enough farm land to live off, and for this your rent is half a days labour per week.
the only other work you need to do is the farming to sustain yourself, which isn't much, as everyone in the villages and towns pitched in.
- ALSO
people did not go to America to escape persecution.
They did not go to america for Liberty.
It was actually the opposite.
who were the settlers in America?
the Puritans.
They left Europe and settled in America because they wanted to persecute people and felt that Europe was far too liberal / godless.
Europeans have been slaves in the past.
In fact the British navy was started as a force to stop north African slavers, who would sail to Britain and raid coastal towns, taking men women and children and making them slaves.
So yea - the whole American dream thing - is hollywood BS i am afraid. had nothing to do with the reason America was settled.
also it would never have been settled, had about 90% of the native population not been wiped out by a serious plague a few years before the white arrival.
