Things I’ve only said in Japan

* My brother: Is this (sea) weed for eating of for smoking?

* to the head priest in a shinto temple near my house : Would you lend me a shovel? I'd like to bury this dead kitten near the temple...

"I come to this shop becouse we like master."

Didn't get it. What do you mean ?
As you probably know, "Master" is the male proprietor of a business like a small drinking establishment, while "mama" or "mama-san" is the female equivelant.

Aren't pets usually cremated in Japan ? I know of a pet crematorium in Ryogoku in Tokyo.

Said to me from a very kind Japanese girl in a restroom...."Do you need help?" Me "Yes! I can't get out of the stall!" I was totally confused as to how to unluck the door. I was given help and I got out, but I was totally embarrased!

Why is that specific to Japan. Either the problem of unlocking the door comes from you (you can't open locks), or that particular lock was defective.

Because Japan is the only place where it has happened to her. That is the point of this thread.

The man was very kind and explained me where is the crematorium, and what to do in order to have it cremated.

*More things I said in Japan:

"May I have coffee instead of tea with the mochi?"

"How should we eat this fish-raw or boiled?"

"Do you sell shirts larger than size LL?"

No.

I guess in this instance referring to the male owner of the establishment as Master is similar in fashion to the west as referring to boss'/teachers/ so on as Sir.

Where did you get the idea that your master of your wife?, it sounds like sarcasm but I cant see the reason behind it, would your wife appreciate that statement?, I get the impression being married to you, a woman needs to be just as independent and stubborn, so I doubt it. 😊

I think you do not understand the principle of this thread. It has to be something specific to Japan. Tea and coffee are as popular in Japan as in any Western country.
"How should we eat this fish-raw or boiled?"
How often do you have boiled fish ? Fried maybe ? You can have almost any fish raw or fried. No need to ask, it's up to YOU.
"Do you sell shirts larger than size LL?"
Wouldn't it something people would say in the USA ?

No.

Other way around actually. You would be asking for XS or smaller in the US.

  • I have to get some money before the ATM closes!
  • I want to give my seat for that old lady over there, but if I stand up this 20 yrs old looking guy will take it for sure...
  • "They have what now?!" "Nattou Tempura with Mentaiko sauce burger..."

Other way round for you, a Japanese in the US. But I have rarely seen sizes over XL (or maybe only XXL) in Europe and Japan, while XXXL, XXXXL, and so on do exist in the US.

Well, do japanese eat sakura mochi with cofee? The waitress said it is okashii, that's why I'm posting it here.

About the fish...Do you eat every fish raw in Belgium?

But of course ! Raw tuna (in French, Italian and fusion cuisine), raw salmon (in French, Scandinavian and other cuisines), raw herring (Typically Belgo-Dutch, known in Dutch as maatjes), and of course sushi as there are more and more sushi restaurants in Belgium. Raw tuna steak (or sloghtly cooked around but raw inside) is by far the most popular nowadays. Even people who have never had Japanese food have eaten it.

The title of this thread is, "things I have only said in Japan". If the poster writes something that he or she has only said (or I assume thought) in Japan and no place else, that is enough to warrant it being said on this thread. I think it is you who does not understand the principle of this thread.

Things I have only said in Japan:

Oh, no, my water pump needs to be primed again!
I think the monkeys in the hills are watching me.
I hope to God that wild boar standing right in front of me doesn't charge.

Mundane? Perhaps. But I have said or thought them only in Japan and nowhere else. Therefore they belong in this thread.

I feel the need to clarify my lock situation in Japan. I can't read Japanese therefore I couldn't read the message on the restroom door that warned visitors that the stall door has a 2nd lock that is locked automatically so I was unaware of this and I only locked one lock....so I couldn't get out! The Japanese girl, bless her sweet heart, had a feeling I wouldn't be able to get out so she waited to see if I needed assistance. I didn't know I had to push a button and a lever. Where I live the bathrooms are less complicated and not so electronic or automatic. :)

Ok, if so here are things which I have only said in Japan :

kore wa ikura desu ka
sumimassen
makunouchi bento onegai shimasu
tendon kudasai
kyoto ni iku densha wa nanbansen desu ka
hiroshima ni iku densha wa nanbansen desu ka
...

or English :

Shall we meet in Shinjuku ?
(to a student) What are you going to do during Obon ?
(to a student) There are 6 future tenses in English...
(to a student) The translation for "zangyou" in English is "overtime work".
(to English-speaking tourists who asked me the way) : to go to Asakusa, take the Ginza line and get off at the last station.

I could continue almost endlessly...

*barges in where angels fear to tread* ;-)
Ok... my understanding of the title of the thread is that it can only be things that the poster has said in Japan... also, it is not specifically stated, but rather, implied, that it has to be something that would only make sense when said in Japan (otherwise, while you might have only said it in Japan, it could just as well be applied to other countries :p).

However, it isn't specifically stated in the title that these should be things that could only be said in Japan. I think everyone took that as an "unwritten law" because otherwise people could post stuff like "Help, I'm lost!" or "Ohhhhhh, my head..." on the grounds that they'd only said it in Japan, whereas there's nothing specifically Japan-related about those things. (afaik... XD) The idea being - I assume! - to underline some differences between Japan and other countries. :)

It's a sad state of affairs when Mikawa is forced by unnecessary events to request clarification on something that shouldn't really need to be clarified. It is (supposed to be) a light-hearted thread in which people can post anything vaguely connected to the title. I find allowing people a certain freedom to interpret the thread a good thing for the content of the posts. Hence it's OK if you heard it or if you said it.

It's the situation of being in Japan when the thing was said that I thought was the key. So if I said it and I was in Japan, that would be enough to post. I would hate to limit people with unnecessary restrictions and force them to wonder if the same could not be applied to another country.

I took it as read that the posts should have some Japanese cultural reference to them. Posters so far have chosen parts of dialogue which reveal little pieces of Japan, good or bad, which is exactly the idea.

I haven't seen anything yet in the thread that is not referring to something that was said (or heard) in Japan, so I haven't felt the need to comment.

There has of course been some great posts and I have chuckled as I read them as I'm sure other people have.

I know how that feels, except I didn't relise it first time, I just got up and some inconsiderate selfish punk jumped into the seat.

Japanese known for their manners?....pleaaaase.
