Please help me what does this mean ?

It seems you are trying to expand a file larger than 4 GB, but your disk isn't formatted to accomodate such a large file. This page has information on how to switch your disk to the NTFS file system:

Additionally, it seems that you might not have enough space for the file on your hard disk anyway, or you might just be seeing that message as a side effect of the second one.

It probably is big enough. You probably need to convert it to NTFS. This is how you convert the drive to NTFS:
Start -> Run
at the prompt type:
CONVERT <Drive letter>: /FS:NTFS
replacing <drive letter> with the letter of the drive you want to convert, so if it's the E drive, it would be
convert e: /fs:ntfs
Then you'd restart your computer and the conversion process would start.

To find out how your drive is formatted now, open My Computer, right click on the drive and select Properties. File System: should show what type you have. If it shows FAT or FAT32, then that's probably your problem.
Converting to NTFS is a one-way process (can't be undone), but I can't think of any reason you would need to undo it.
On second thought, there are a few drawbacks. Please read that page I linked you to and see whether having NTFS would be a problem.

I'm contemplating doing this procedure on my other computer (the one I built for the wife-n-kiddies), so it would be very beneficial to me if you would do me the favor of elaborating on what "patch it with a whatnot" means, please.

You definitely want to use NTFS, rather than fat32, or maybe Mike is using fat16... Is it Win 1.3? 
There is a greater amount of security using NTFS, but this is mostly useless to people who are normal home users...
One big advantage of NTFS is the cluster size is set 4k, where, in fat32, you have a larger cluster size, & so a file that is broken up into different chunks (clusters), so even if your file is X amount in size, it takes up a larger chunk of disk space due to the cluster size...
The only problem I can see w/ converting a fat32 system to NTFS is that you need to use a boot mechanism that will recognize NTFS volumes, which the fat32 boot disks DO NOT...
There should actually be Volume Conversion Utilities, in XP, probably in system tools, or under tools when you right click the properties of the drive... But here is a page from MS on how to do the conversion manually...
And, NO, you can not convert back--- but you really don't want to in this day and age... There's really no point to using fat32.

It may be a problem if you want to use the HDD with more than one computer and at least one has a non NT-based Windows (95, 98, Me) OS. There's also the dual-boot situation. But as long as that's not an issue, I don't think it's much more complicated than the instructions I left above.

If your luck & skill with computers is anything like mine, attempted change will be met with mind numbing complications and a PC that needs to go to the repair shop, LOL. Rather then to try and load the new Vista (or whatever they call it) I'm going to give in and buy a new desk top with it all loaded in and a 3 year repair deal. Just about the time the tax refund is out, they ought to be on sale, I hope.
