I can't make of this line which is said by a game character who is your partner/quest-giver (kind of your person secretary). As far as I know 匙 just means spoon. Sometimes used in metaphors, but not in a way that I can logically extend to this. I suppose from context it either means we'll be the most proactive, or else, we'll reap the most accolades, but I don't really see how.

Yeah, the context is just that we are going to 'investigate' a powerful new variant monster (investigations always seem to turn into fights, somehow, but y'know). It's supposed to be an important mission from the commander himself, FWIW, but there's no actual spoons involved.

I also wondered a little if it was a pun, but a phonetic pun doesn't really work if you spell it in kanji (also I can't think of anything it puns on).

Sometimes jokes are inserted into these kinds of nominally serious conversations, helps keep it entertaining despite the repetitive nature of start-of-mission conversations, so I do think it's likely a joke of some kind but I don't think it's a pun since it was spelled in kanji. Maybe it's just meant to be a slip of the tongue and is a near-miss for some similar expression, idk.

Perhaps it's related to the idea of 一番茶, which is the finest tea of the year.

Or perhaps it's related to the phrase 匙を投げる, which is related to medicine in origin. See link.

So it could be something along the lines of, "Once again we get the best (case)" or "Once again, we get the first spoonful (of medicine)". The medicine, of course, being said both metaphorically and sarcastically.

匙 is a Kanji Kentei Level 1 kanji, so normally you don't find these difficult kanji in games. (I didn't know it until today).

So the dialogue must be meant for university graduates and above. Well, I guess if they put rubi over the kanji it would be OK for younger audiences. But then again, they could just write it in kana and save the trouble of rubi.

Oh, there's no rubi anywhere as far as I can recall. The page in the 大型モンスター図鑑 for the monster in question (incomplete at this point in my playthrough) currently looks like this:

The Monster Hunter series has been a going franchise for nearly 20 years now (20th anniversary will be September) so a lot of the long time players are certainly adults, but I believe a lot of newer players are high school and college students (it's definitely not for very young kids though). I guess the kanji on this particular page are all pretty easy to read, but 匙 is certainly not the first character to make me grateful for handwriting input methods... 珊瑚 and 蟻塚 for example, but maybe that's just me. If I watched more nature documentaries they'd probably be easy.

Call me biased (because I am), but I like this one the best.

A more natural translation might be "Once again, we get the first bite," using this as the intended meaning.

It is interesting, but no, I don't think it fits here. There are neither keys nor any reason to think a Chinese meaning would be used. (May be the only fantasy game ever without keys, there's usually a surplus of them, all different colors... )

I think Mikawa Ossan has it. It makes sense as a metaphor, and we are almost always the first to go after newly discovered monsters, being the player character and all. It's almost like the other hunters don't do anything at all! Well, once in a while, when it's important to advancing the plot, they do.

Oh, nice work searching that out! That's very interesting, but unfortunately no, there's no connection. As far as I know that silver spoon was limited to MH4 (and possibly for a limited time, I'm not sure if there's ways to access event weapons after the collab event is over). It doesn't appear in MH:World, which is the one I'm playing. There's also been no other references to spoons, and certainly not spoons as weapons.

A giant spoon for a weapon though... well, the 狩猟笛 line of weapons is all ridiculous anyway, beating monsters to death with bagpipes or bugles or who knows what. I don't use them at all, that's just too silly for me, I'll stick to my チャージアックス (not that a sword that stores up energy and can be transformed into a giant axe to spend that energy in explosive attacks is in any way realistic, but, y'know, unrealistic in a power-fantasy way instead of a plain silly way.)
