This is both interesting and tragic. Former table-tennis player Ai Fukuhara has refused to return her son to her Taiwanese ex-husband, breaching a custody agreement, after her son visited her in Japan last year. No doubt the Japanese government will be ensuring that Fukuhara follows the guidelines of the Hague Convention, which Japan is a signatory to.

The interwebs say the separation is due to her having an affair--seen having a date with another guy and then also going to a hotel? Seems to have been news then.

Then left their kids there in taiwan with the taiwanese guy and his mother, and now is keeping one of those kids here, separating the siblings from each other by doing so, and against a court order?

Hmm...

Sadly not the first, nor the last such abduction. And it will be more of the same puppet show for the "attempt" to follow the convention. :(

Japan's government needs to realize that both parents matter for the children.

To be honest, I never liked her, even when she was a child prodigy shrieking with triumph every time her opponent made a mistake!

I remember she shrieked every time she hit the ball, which gave her matches quite a salacious touch. TBS had a lengthy feature on her yesterday, and I guess that from now on, she'll be considered a persona non grata in the industry. No more advertisements if she still had any contracts running.

Edit: Apparently, she is still sponsored by ANA.

I felt very sorry for her ex-husband, his tears at the news conference appeared genuine. :(
