I love the chains and the ropes.

I drink almost nothing but diet A&W root beer now. It's about the only diet soda I can stand the taste of. In the 60's , the A&W was the place to go to eat. The girls were all young and good looking and were on roller skates. They would take your order and then bring it to your car and hook the tray on your window. When you were finished , you flashed your car headlights and they would come take the tray. You never left your car or went inside. Their root beer ice cream floats were the best.I go through about 12 bottles a week now.
Here's something to compare--a shot of a boat, and one of a residence. I think these are comparable, that they are like each other more than they are not. One is a working fishing boat, the other just a place in town. What do you think?
This boat is a workhorse, a commercial boat. Most of the other boats at the same, small port, are all smaller, go out only irregularly (fair weather fishing?), or maybe when their owners have time off from their other jobs.
And while the others can be pretty sterile-looking--everything packed up, closed up, and put away, this one shows its life/purpose. It's a big boat, I wasn't sure how to crop it. The dark blue thing on the left is a big winch for (I think) lifting full nets out of the water.
But all the poles with nets, the various ropes both laying there and tied up on the side and the ladder, and just what's visible in the window... this boat has life (a life?). People live/work on it in a way that seems comparable to the way that the assortment of plants in the other shot reflects something about the person/people living there.

The boat made me think of an old Boatswain's Mate Chief giving the owner a lecture on getting his ship squared away , LOL. Keeping all those plants watered must take some time.

Endless flocks of egrets along the river today, with some cormorants mingling. Is this a seasonal thing? I wish I had stopped to take a picture, but in one location, several hundred photographers crowded on the riverbank to get their shots of the flocks.

Yes, its the season where they all flock together at the shores of the rivers. They are present today in Yamaguchi ken also. Not sure what type of minnows that are going after though.

Today, we visited Shirakawago in Gifu. Has anyone been there? Honestly, we expected more, but the snow-covered village was quite picturesque. There were busloads of international tourists, mainly from Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. A few impressions below.

I'm pretty sure I've been there but it would have been in summer. I just remember it being picturesque but not actually doing anything much that I can remember. I'd have to dig up the photos. It would have been about 25 years ago.

Japan Photos 2023
Someone has to get the ball rolling, so what could be a better start than the osechi festa at the in-laws? :) Unedited. A delicacy from Matsumoto (Junmai Daiginjō Nama Sparkling), to be reviewed later. And an auspicious view from the balcony:
