Google said today that it will open its first data centre in Japan by 2023. The company noted that this data centre will be located in Inzai City, Chiba, and is a part of its $730 million infrastructure fund that will continue through 2024. This is the company's third data centre in Asia, after Taiwan and Singapore.

The company said that this new data center will help people with "faster, more reliable access to our tools and services, support economic activity and jobs, and connect Japan to the rest of the global digital economy." Notably, Google already has cloud regions in Tokyo and Osaka to provide storage and infrastructure services for local businesses. The company partners with colocation facilities providers like Equinix to power these regions for Google Cloud customers, but now it's building its own data center to cater to all of its own services — this includes YouTube, Gmail, and all the rest.

The company says the investment will be directed to submarine cables and human resource development, in addition to building its first data center in Japan. Google will construct the data center in Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo, and plans to begin operations there in 2023. In addition to increasing the convenience of internet services for customers, Pichai said Google aims to support the digital transformation of Japanese companies through its cloud computing business. "I think it has an opportunity to lead in digital transformation," he said. Pichai's remarks come as the company accelerates the streamlining of its business, as expectations for an economic slowdown grow. Demand for Google's services grew due to the COVID-19 pandemic, driving the expansion of Google's parent company, Alphabet. But its profit has declined for two consecutive quarters, through April to June, as inflation and other factors weigh on its business. In July, the company decided to slow the pace of hiring until year's end.

So, jobs?

Quoting Nikkei:

"Going into 2023, we will moderate the pace of hiring," compared with this year, he said. "But we'll still be hiring in critical roles, especially product and engineering, and other critical functions."

Scary how Google tracks you. I could look up "hemroid cream" and I see ads for it the next 3 weeks , LOL.

World eyes watching us. Already many American YouTubes are banned here in Japan and many Japanese videos are banned in the USA.

Personally, I don't like this. The reason why is if we in the future have to have a "My Number" to log into the net, well, time will tell what that means. I don't like the idea of "Ministry of Truth" will be implemented. A real possibility for us using the net and with the IRS hiring about 87000 new agents, it doesn't look good for us that may sell stuff here in Japan. The gains could be taxable when using PayPal. Lots going on about this new IRS rule.

Guys, please hold your horses! This is not a global conspiracy thread; it's about Google opening its first DC in Japan. :)

The only reason some videos cannot be watched in particular localities is copyrights, a situation that does not only concern Japan and the US.
