Thanks Toritoribe-san. The other one should be the potential form, I guess. I didn't expect that and I had expected a regular masu-stem to be used. Moreover the translation on the web site doesn't seem to indicate that, i.e. You can find a fly almost everywhere in the world, including Antarctica. Why a potential form necessary? What could be the difference in meaning if the regular masu-stem is used? Thanks! Is there any possibility other than that?
Yes, I always doubt myself as far as learning is concerned. I got this as a potential form by reading the conjugation table. There was no further info from the Japanese-English dictionary I used. Though you quoted a lot from Japanese-Japanese dictionaries, I often failed to get a full understanding because my competency was not that good. For those not so complicated I needed to look up a lot of words in the dictionary.Isn't there any possibility that your presumption is not correct?
For example I came across 会議の中ではとても活気のある話し合いがもてた yesterday. I wasn't too sure which verb もてた was. Was it the past tense of 持てる which was also the potential form of 持つ? Since it went with the particle が, I suspected it was a potential form. If it was, why was a potential form being used. I'm still at a loss.
Yes, もてた is the past potential form of 持つ there. While とても活気のある話し合いを持った is just a neutral description of a past event, 持てた implies the subject's/speaker's satisfaction. Thus, this potential form only can be used in positive meanings. You can't say, for example, とてもひどい話し合いが持てた (well, except as a sarcastic expression or something). It's the same as "we were able to have a good meeting" in English, no?Was it the past tense of 持てる which was also the potential form of 持つ?
That's not correct. The potential form, passive form, causative form etc. of a verb works as a verb, so the -masu stem of these conjunction forms can be used to connect clauses as same as the regular/original verb's stem.a REGULAR conjunctive form should be used if the sentence does not end there. And a conjunctive form of other conjugation such as that of potential form never plays in such role.
