All the places I'm looking at show most of the greater Tokyo area as a 4 or at least a 3:

It's kind of become a running joke that my daughter and I sleep through all these big earthquakes, leaving my poor wife awake to fear for her life alone.
(It further helped that this time I was/am in Kyushu for work, and had been awake since about 4 a.m. yesterday.)

That's probably the best way to live through an earthquake.

There were also extensive power outages (2.2m households); my sister in law in Chiba was affected, too.

Actually it felt very strong in my part of west Tokyo. I thought that the big one had arrived and was surprised to find that it was 'only' a 4 where I live.

In our area, this was easily the biggest temblor since the 2011 東北地方太平洋沖地震.

This morning, we had also an earthquake in the Hormozgan province in the southeast area, nearby Pakistan and Afghanistan borders. The quake place is a rural area with 32 villages. The magnitude of the shaking was about 6 Rich and 10 Km underground dept.

Fortunately, the quake hadn't any casualty but probably it damaged some rural houses that usually haven't the enforced structures. The organizations that moved to the area are assessing the level of damages in those villages, especially the closer villages to the earthquake center. Despite the shaking power, I don't think damages are at a high level because none of the residents lost their lives.

Based on the last news, the earthquake damaged the electricity network of the area and in some places, landslides happened in the mountains and blocked some roads but casualty has not been reported up to now.

What was the last time that Japan (or the areas around) had an undersea volcanic eruption in history?

I searched the internet and found this brief report:

A volcanic eruption of Mount Ontake (御嶽山, Ontake-san) took place on September 27, 2014, killing 63 people. Mount Ontake is a volcano located on the Japanese island of Honshu around 100 kilometres (62 mi) northeast of Nagoya and around 200 km (120 mi) west of Tokyo.

The recent events in the zone tell me there is a probability that an eruption happen at the same point. I don't want to make you worry but I warn you to be alerted about such happening that may take place in the Ontake or the seashores close to Japan.

The nearby ocean's bed shows, it is unrest, and I ask the Japanese government and society to be ready for such eruption and reinforce everything that is necessary.

What I say is not a certain thing but is a precaution based on the signs.
