COVID-19 Coronavirus: global situation

While things are looking quite promising in Japan, some European countries see new record numbers in infections. As of today, Austria imposed a strict lockdown on all unvaccinated people. Currently, about 65% of the population are fully vaccinated. Given the skyrocketing numbers of new infections and Covid-related fatalities, unvaccinated are banned from leaving their homes except for essential activities such as working, grocery shopping, going for a walk or getting vaccinated. The government's aim is twofold: reducing the mounting strain on the health system and encouraging vaccine-sceptics to get their jab finally. In the days leading up to the lockdown, people were queuing up nationwide for their shots.

I am so glad that Japan isn't prone to conspiracy theories, anti-science ideology, and profound misconceptions of personal freedom.

The behavior of this virus is really quite perplexing. The story of what happened and why in each country or state will be the topic of research for decades to come. I have to wonder if there is some human genetic component. Japan really seemed ripe for it to be a lot worse than it became given the elderly population and high population density. Seems difficult to explain away with just mask use alone. And so far I there hasn't been a huge wave of deaths compared to the normal rates, right?

That's correct. Although according to this study, the actual number of total infections in Japan is likely four times higher than reported. It's probably a combination of factors: masks, social distancing (less physical contact due to cultural and social circumstances), the religious usage of hand sanitisers, very little scepticism towards science and medicine, etc.

Japan could see a vaccination rate of 80% by the end of this year.

Maine cases are hard to understand. The state bragged we were over 80% vaccinated and down to around 100 or less cases a day. We also heard little about children being infected. Now this month , we are having around 700 or more cases a day and kids are also getting hit with it really bad , closing down several schools. It makes me question how effective the vaccines are. I wish they would tell us how many of the infected have had their shots , but they don't mention that.

A lot of people are using these trends to promote vaccine conspiracy theories, saying that the vaccine itself causes Covid or makes it spread even worse. However I've observed that after getting vaccinated that people let down their guard. They start gathering, start going maskless, acting like the danger is over and the parties can begin.

After a while that the virus was supposed to go away due to vaccination, it came back again!

Apparently it is not giving up the societies! This little beast has become the biggest problem after other odd events that some are natural, and some are because of the supremacy dream of some wrong groups.

I heard in the news that corona disease went back to Europe in recent days, though I just read the titles of the news on TV.

Right! And they just lifted the mask mandate in alot of places in America and that makes me a little worried too but so far we are doing good but I wouldn't be surprised if covid spikes up again

I don't follow the news of covid-19 much, neither in Iran nor in other lands, because this makes me sad and I wouldn't like to get depression. As far as I know, Iran has had some peaks of the disease during these two years ( I think five peaks).
At the peak of the disease, the number of infected people and casualties was high. I don't remember the number of infected people but sadly the casualty was about 500~ 600 dead (before vaccination). After vaccination, the number of fatalities decreased considerably. These days, I don't know how many people are infected and how many lose their souls, because I don't listen to such internal news much.

Nevertheless, I know, we haven't here something like "the virus is back". In comparison with the past, the situation is really so much better, though the casualties continue in a lower number.

Vaccination was not useless. it prevented many deaths. though some people who are vaccinated may be infected with the virus, but usually the symptoms of covid in such persons is not serious to lead to hospitalization and death.

South African scientists have discovered a new virus variant amid a new spike. The UK has banned travel from SA and five other African nations. It is still unclear what public health impact the new variant will have.

"Over the last four or five days, there has been more of an exponential rise," he said, adding that the new variant appears to be driving the spike in cases. Scientists in South Africa are working to determine what percentage of the new cases have been caused by the new variant. Currently identified as B.1.1.529, the new variant has also been found in Botswana and Hong Kong in travelers from South Africa, he said. The World Health Organization's technical working group is to meet Friday to assess the new variant and may decide whether or not to give it a name from the Greek alphabet. The British government announced that it was banning flights from South Africa and five other southern African countries effective at noon (1200GMT) on Friday, and that anyone who had recently arrived from those countries would be asked to take a coronavirus test.

We have a proverb ( a short rhythmic poem) that says :

هر دم از این باغ بری می رسد
تازه تر از تازه تری می رسد

Every moment a new fruit reach us from this garden
A newer one than the new one comes in!

We have not gotten rid of the older virus while the new brothers of the virus are born! LOL

Maine is getting hit so bad , I'm almost afraid to leave my house now. I'm guessing there will be another new booster shot in the near future. Even with almost everyone vaccinated , we went from under 100 cases a day to almost 1000 cases a day now and the hospitals are almost full with the sick.

Sorry to hear that. I thought the northern states were doing relatively well and that it was the southern states with a relatively high number of unvaccinated that were being hit hard.

Hi, Frank

Sorry I hear you are sick and sorry for raising the number of infected people in America. I don't know what the virus is doing. At different times, it has a vast invasion in the various lands; sometimes in the eastern and sometimes in the western countries. No country and people are safe against it.

Last week, I had an intense digestive system disorder. In addition to doing a particular exercise (that I innovated for this kind of digestive disorder years ago) I used different relative medicines. Nevertheless, my recovery was slow, and the persistent malady didn't leave me. Finally, I had to pray and pray, and it really worked, and God saved me from the pitiless sickness that deactivated and blocked my stomach wholly. At the time, I sometimes thought, I am close to the finish line!

I don't know whether it was a digestive disorder or was the effect of Coronavirus that hit my stomach and gut instead of my other organs.

Thanks to God. Now, after the dark week, I am well and don't feel any uneasy.

I hope you get better, as well :)

I dont understand how does this virus make so many new variants???? Its crazy!

Down is the south here the variant hasnt gotten here yet. I wont dout it be long though. I am so glad you got well!

Thank you very much, Jhopesstrawberry :)

I hope the virus is rooted up from the world soon. It has damaged many people.

Hearing the news of the number of people, who were infected and hospitalized, or lost their souls seems insignificant, but seeing them in the situation face to face, exhibits a tragedy.

The virus also damaged the economy of different countries, especially Iran that been under an unfair and comprehensive economic sanction for 14 years faultlessly. (this is not a political expression, but I am showing you the difficult situation of Iran in the covid-19 disease season).

The virus also damaged many jobs, industries, and markets. It put people in a laboring living, especially the poor people or people with low incomes.

I sometimes stop in front of hamburger shops, look at the hot hamburgers, swallow my mouth water, and after taking my hand in all my pockets I see, it is better I get not in!

Or the shock absorber spring of my car has been worn, and due to the hardness, it has broken the car chassis from six months ago, but I have to drive it in the streets with a sound like a hippo's sniffing!

I'm just an example, and many people in the world have encountered similar difficulties.

The virus also imposed high budgets on the countries to fight against coronavirus, among the cost of treatment of millions of patients in the hospitals or vaccination and similar things.

I don't think we can find a disease in history that has had such comprehensive damages in a long period in the world.

The omicron variant of the coronavirus has increased transmissibility compared to the delta variant: its aerosols may stay viable longer thanks to a kind of improved protective coating that consists of mucins (proteins from the lung's mucus lining).

The reason is simple physics: the mucins are negatively charged, and the spike proteins have a positive charge, so the mucins seem to gather around the virus particles. It is believed that the mucins binding with the spike proteins form a protective coating, preventing damage to the virus. And the omicron variant acquires a more effective coating than the delta variant, meaning it could stay infectious outside the body for longer.

Professor Shimizu pointed out that previous variants such as alpha and delta began their spread inside the country at times just like now, when overall infections were at a low ebb. In South Africa, too, omicron case numbers began to grow around the time the delta variant had been brought under control. "It's easier for new variants to spread when older ones are on the decline, as that means the new version has fewer competitors," said Shimizu. Asked about steps Japan should take to counter the potential spread of omicron domestically, Shimizu pointed out that "urethane foam masks have almost no anti-infection effect." He added, "Making sure there are no gaps (between your mask and your face), such as by wearing two unwoven cloth masks, is effective, as is making sure to maintain proper ventilation."

No confirmed cases of the new variant here in Maine but we are getting slammed big time. At the beginning of this Maine had usually under 200 cases a day at the peak. Now we are running over 1000 new cases a day. 6 months ago they bragged 80% had their shots so it seems weird all of a sudden the big surge. They have called in the National Guard to help out in the overcrowded hospitals that are jammed full with the sick. We went from on death a week to several each day. Makes me glad I'm a hermit who hardly ever leaves the house.

I don't know around here we still going around with no masks... But I heard our covid cases may be increasing not incredibly so though.

It's not weird at all. People are going back to normal activities plus they are not masking -- shopping, going out to eat, having family gatherings. The vaccinated have let their guard down thinking they're protected and the unvaccinated for the most part not been careful from the start. Even though the spread of Covid has been as bad as it's ever been most state governments have not been taking action and businesses are just following suit. My company had a Christmas lunch yesterday with about 60 people gathered. While it's true most of the hospitalized are unvaccinated, many of the vaccinated end up there as well.

Just half an hour ago when I was eating my breakfast in front of the TV, I heard from BBC news agency, the Micron type of the virus has been spread out in England vastly and probably it will find its way to other European countries gradually. BBC reporter said, based on the emergence research, the scientists opined its epidemic rate is seventy times more than the last generation of the virus! But its symptoms and danger and casualty are less. The reporter quoted; people should do their third stage of vaccinations to raise their immunity.

The UK is suffering a tsunami of Covid-19 cases with 94,000 new infections just yesterday--a new record. Those numbers are caused by a wave of both the Delta and the Omicron variants, with most cases in London being Omicron. In response, the British government decided to reimpose restrictions which led to a Tory revolt against PM Johnson (after the Tories lost an electoral district they'd held for almost two centuries). Some 70% of the British population are fully vaccinated, and the delivery of booster shots has already been accelerated (34% of the population have received them). Luckily, the death toll from the recent wave has remained relatively low. All this seems unfathomable from the relative safety of Japan, where the Delta wave appears to have all but vanished.

Here's an interesting historical insight into the playbook of the anti-vaccination movement. The British anti-vaxxers of the 1860s used the same "narrative" as their contemporary global brethren. Their credo was "liberty before public health."

Conclusion: anti-vaxx history repeats itself.
Here's a good site for some "fun" reading. It essentially ridicules severely ill or dead anti-vaxxers. But it's careful to only list people who were actively anti-vax, who spread dangerous messages and falsehoods. It turns out nearly all of them die in the hospital. Somehow they suddenly trust the medical establishment when they are having trouble breathing and don't question all the drugs they are given during their hospital stays.
