Young people living alone in Japan

Hello all, I just have a question about young native japanese living by themselves. In many anime I have seen, often young japanese people(in high school or earlier) live alone without parents or guardians. Is this actually a common occurrence in Japan, and how does this work anyway?

I can't speak for everyone's living situation, but you probably shouldn't presume the truth of anything you see in anime. Ask yourself the same question about your own country and you'll probably arrive to the same conclusion.

Young people you say?
Well, in shounen anime, most of the time you'll have 14-15 yo characters with older looks, say, like 18-22, so its completely unreliable.
However, in many cases, you can barely guess at the age.
You can see 16ish looking university students in anime living alone, and its true, many university students start to live alone pretty much in any country, the problem is that they're probably not 16 yo.
I don't know how's it in Japan, but certainly, around 19-20 a person can take care of himself. Although, I must repeat, anime can fool you.

A large portion of Japanese people live with their parents well into their mid-20s and beyond.

Young people in Jpland live with theyr parents as long as possible,esp. males.
Its convenient.Rents are astronomic for them. If they move its
because of business or marriage !!

that's true. I met a woman in her forties who still lives with her mother. Bascially, the children only move out if they get married or have to relocate for a job.

Like most people answered I agree with the whole don't trust anime/manga thing. In america it's just like movies/tv shows. it's fantasy with a bit of reality mixed in. Although one possible reason alot of teens live alone in anime is because there's no reason for the parents to be part of the story or for the character to progress, their family, history , siblings are not needed so they don't add them to the story. This is just my guess about that.

I think the setup of this forum is partially to blame. You often see older topics under the "similar threads" area. I too am often drawn to a certain topic, only to notice just before posting that it is a 3/6/x year old thread.

It's been suggested before, and we had such a feature on the old forum software: a notice indicating that a thread hasn't been updated in x number of months/years. I'll be more than glad to implement that feature as soon as a similar XF add-on becomes available.

If we really don't want necroposting, perhaps we could automatically lock threads after some reasonable amount of time such as a year.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I kind of like necroposting. It sometimes brings threads to my attention I wouldn't have otherwise seen, and can add to discussion.

I'm not advocating a rule change or anything, I'm sure the rule was instituted in response to a problem. Just sharing what I've noted.

The only time it is really a "why did you reply to this?" situation is when it is in reply to a very narrow question from a poster who is long gone.... and who often didn't even bother to come back to check for replies when the thread was new.

Yes, I should have been more clear. My point wasn't about this thread or the responses to similar threads, it was more of a general note about how I feel about necroposting.
