Wages of working women in Japan amount to 2,680,000 yen a year on average. This amount equates to only 53.2% of the 5,040,000 yen male workers annually earn on average. Japan is at the top of the list among OECD nations in regard to the gender gap in wages.

According to a World Economic Forum report on gender equality, Japan ranked 101st among 135 countries in 2012, dropping from its previous place of 98th. Gender imbalance or discrimination against women in Japan is a disgrace. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has expressed concern over disparities in wages and other discriminatory treatment in Japan in regard to women. In response to the UN recommendation, the Japanese government should earnestly work on rectifying the situation.

"Should" does not equal "will". Sad but true.

The stats are very misleading. Try look for stat of people under 35. Also, illegal things such as prostitution probably are not included. It also ignore things like somewhat expectation of men treating women(in general of world).

Have the leftists considered that Maybe woman have different preferences to men when it comes to career and life in general?

Why are you so hostile? I think in USA it is way less of issue.

That's really not a solution to the problem. Some women have what 'leftists' would call traditional preferences. Many, actually. The question of what those who don't subscribe to that lifestyle is more of the question of this study.

For every two happy housewives/wannabe housewives, I meet an independent women who has zero interest in subscribing to old roles.

Japan is really around where America was in the 60's. Some women are totally happy, but a lot aren't, and they want options. Would you, Morphling, suggest they don't get options because many women are happy with limited ones?

Personally, I think gender roles are fine if you chose them, but it's a miserable life if you're assigned them, and worse still if you're mocked for not subscribing to them, ie. drinking commie koolaid. Mock and stamp out those ****ers not falling into millennia of tradition, eh? Strangely, to me, that seems way more of a commie koolaid system to me. Succumb to power, don't fight it, right?

But an issue nevertheless. To make 70 to 85 percent of what men make in the same profession (see graph for a breakdown) is unequal and unfair.
