Why are so many common items made in Japan? (Not like U.S.)

I mean that when you go to a store, there are many things made in Japan when you're shopping in Japan, but in America (where I currently reside) almost everything seems to be made somewhere else.

Go to a random store in Japan and just keep looking until you find something, anything, made in Japan. Then go to a similar store in America and keep looking until you find something made in the U.S.A. I would be willing to wager that you'll find a Japanese product in Japan before you find an American product in America. In fact, I'm quite certain.

But what is different that allows for this? In my opinion, Japan must be doing something right to have so many consumer products produced and available locally.

Most of clothing/footwear/underwear at my neighboring superstores are Made-in-China/Vietnam today.
Most of consumer products at home electronics stores are Japanese MFG brands, but Made-in-Taiwan/China/Malaysia/Thailand.

Yes, most of package foods are Made-in-Japan, but we are seeing a lots of import foods as well at supermarkets, typically Aussie Beef, US Beef, Canadian Pork, Mexican avocado, Philipines Banana, Thai mango, etc. Plus, lots of Norwegian salmon at fish section at supermarkets.

So I wonder which consumer products you are pointing out.
