Where is a good shizuka (quiet) place to relax with my loved one?

Greetings all.

I am an American living and working in Japan. My work schedule is going to be tough the next couple of months, so I want to plan a nice getaway for me and my girlfriend to go during Golden Week. I'd like to stay in Japan to avoid air travel, customs, etc. I'd like to find a place on Honshu where I can just drive us and forget about city life.

Any recommendations? Something quiet where we can just enjoy the beauty of nature and the company of each other. Sorry if this is too vague.

Thanks in advance; this is an excellent forum.

Cheers!

How about those onsen resorts up in the mountains of Tochigi /Gunma?
Nasu/Shiobara, Kusatsu, Ikaho, Minakami... They all can be accessed pretty easily by car/train/bus from Tokyo. I visited Ikaho and Minakami last summer and absolutely loved them.

Thank you very much Ashikaga. That place does look beautiful.

I'm a little concerned about the temperature. I am from Detroit and don't mind cold weather, but my girlfriend is from Nagoya area and I think she would rather be somewhere warmer. Although the season will change by then...

.. Thank you so much for the ideas. Certainly going into my notes.

Cheers!

Have you ever heard about Shirakawagou 白川郷?
It's quite near to Nagoya if you want to go by car.
I stayed there and it was an unforgetable day.
It's a small, lovely and romantic traditional village, with nice ONSEN and old traditional RYOKAN to stay in.
It was declared world heritage by the UNESCO.
I recommend it honestly.

That is why I love this thread. I have to go to bed now as I have come down with a cold recently, but keep them coming. Both options look very nice. I'll be carefully looking at everything in the next couple of days.

Thanks much!!

I had a very nice stay in a very traditionnal onsen-hotel in Beppu. It was so quiet, so far away from the big cities noise. So relaxing.
Of course, that's not Honshu.
