When Should I Leave?

I'm going to be studying in Japan next month and the school has given me an arrival date of the June the 2nd if I want to save on the airport pickup fee. However it's just hit me that there's a major time difference between California and Tokyo and I'm not sure if I should leave on the 1st here to get to Tokyo on the 2nd?

Can anyone give me a tip on scheduling a flight? I don't want to leave too late and end up arriving on the 3rd.

you are 10 hours behind Japan's time? Then figure in the flight time for you to get to Japan, probably around 10 hours? The airline would know more on flight time probably. That gives you a guesstimate until you get a more detailed answer. Maybe figure in an hour or two at the airport for customs and money exchange.

I think it is more like 15 or 16 hours, no?? since Central time is 13 or 14 hours behind Japan right now (I got all confused since Japan doesn't have Daylights Savings) and California is 2 hours behind Central time.

So, I think just like check on a website like Orbitz and it'll say there departure time and arrival time in Japan just so you can get an idea of the time difference.

It's 16 hours ahead of Cali, I went in the wrong direction, LOL. Sorry about that.

During daylight savings time, Japan is ahead of California 16 hours.

If you leave Los Angeles International Airport at around 11:00 am, you will arrive in Japan the next day around 3:00 PM. Flight time from LAX to Narita is roughly 10.5 to 11 hours long.

When you go to the flight agency to book your flight they have the option to either search based on intended departure date/time, or on your intended arrival date/time. So go there and tell them that you want to arrive on the 2nd, and let them do the hard work for you.
